Bakersfield starter Jake Johnson allowed two runs over seven innings and the Blaze defeated the Modesto Nuts 6-3 on Friday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Ryan Wright opened the scoring for Bakersfield with a two-run double in the third inning. Marquez Smith then scored Juan Perez with a fielder's choice for a 3-0 lead.
Yorman Rodriguez made it 4-0 in the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season. Bakersfield tacked on single runs in the fifth and eighth innings.
Johnson (3-1) allowed only five hits, struck out six batters and walked one to earn the victory. Pat Doyle allowed one run in one inning of relief and El'Hajj Muhammad pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the season. Muhammad has a 1.06 ERA on the season.
Perez, the leadoff hitter, went 3-for-4 with two runs for the Blaze. Wright, the No. 2 hitter, went 2-for-2 and No. 3 hitter Smith went 2-for-4 as the top three batters in the Bakersfield lineup all had multiple hits. Perez stole his sixth base of the season.
The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for Bakersfield (9-29). The Blaze was swept in a four-game series at Modesto last week.
Bakersfield hosts Modesto (15-20) tonight at 7:30.
