Anthony Phillips had three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs to lead the High Desert Mavericks to a 13-9 victory over the Blaze in a Cal League baseball game Wednesday at Mavericks Stadium. Bakersfield has lost four straight.
High Desert (10-10) pounded Blaze starter Jake Johnson (1-1) for eight earned runs on 10 hits in three-plus innings.
The Mavericks scored four runs in the second inning and seven more in the fourth on the way to a 12-6 lead.
Johnson was relieved by Brooks Pinckard with none out in the fourth, but Pinckard walked three and surrendered four earned runs in 2/3 of an innning of work, with a bulk of the damage coming on a three-run homer by the Mavericks' Ji-Man Choi.
Bakersfield (5-15) tagged winner Cam Hobson (3-0) for 11 hits and six earned runs in five innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Marquez Smith was a bright spot for the Blaze, ripping a triple and homer among his three hits. He had two RBIs.
Ryan Wright, Juan Silverio and Juan Silva also had three hits apiece for Bakersfield, which matched High Desert with 15 hits. Wright, and Yorman Rodriguez, who had two hits, drove in two runs apiece.
