A smattering of news on this Monday:
• USC kicker and Stockdale graduate Andre Heidari had knee surgery last week and will miss at least three more weeks after not playing in the No. 2 Trojans' victory against Syracuse in East Rutherford, N.J., over the weekend. Bakersfield graduate Craig McMahon has been handling kickoffs in Heidari's absence, but a third kicker did the place-kicking against Syracuse and is listed as the starter for this weekend's Pac-12 Conference opener at Stanford.
• Another former prep name you might recognize is Tyler Ferguson, who was the quarterback for undefeated Ridgeview the first half of last season until he broke his collarbone. Ferguson had some Division I college interest until the injury, and so he's trying to get back on coaches' radar at College of the Sequoias in Visalia. Days like Saturday will help: 481 yards and six touchdowns in a rout of Reedley College. Three of those TDs, by the way, came to Ferguson's roommate, Bakersfield graduate Kevin Elijah.
• Congratulations to the Highland girls golf team, which shot 536 and won the first SEYL tournament victory in more than five years, beating the likes of Tehachapi and Garces to do so. The Scots' boys and girls teams have made great strides on the links in the past couple of years.
• Tuesday is a big day for Division I Central Section volleyball, with Clovis East coming to town to play streaking Frontier and defending section champion Clovis West in town at Stockdale. The Golden Eagles will return next week for a match with Liberty that very well could determine the No. 1 seed come playoff time. But teams like Centennial and Frontier, which has lost just once, will have plenty to say about that, too.
• And Wednesday is the day for cross country's local debut with the annual East Bakersfield Invitational at Lake Ming. The big story? Whether Stockdale's sensational junior, Blake Haney, will run after nursing an IT band injury above his knee for the past month. It's something that's bothered him before, so he wants to take it easy. If he's feeling good enough to run in this early-season race, consider it a good sign.

Blood stains are still visible on the sidewalk at the corner of Flower Street and Palm Drive, where a Bakersfield man struggled with as many as nine officers and later died this week.
Responding to what he called a case that “has consumed the media and our community,” Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said Tuesday he has asked the FBI to conduct a “parallel” investigation into the death of Bakersfield father of four David Sal Silva, who died May 8 after he was beaten by deputies.
