Dan Lemon, left, talks to Stockdale baseball player J.C. Coles after the Mustangs lost the Central Section Division I championship game to Clovis North in May. Lemon is taking over the Mustangs' boys golf program, while Brad Showers will coach baseball.

There are a couple of pretty major news items included in this post, but they're loosely connected, so you're getting them in the same post.

First is that Stockdale has begun to hire new coaches for its plethora of vacancies:

• Dan Lemon, as expected, has moved from baseball to boys golf, where he won't be known as a legend anymore but where he can ride a golf cart to his heart's content. He won 380 games, nine league championships and two Central Section titles in 21 years as the Mustangs' baseball coach.

• Lemon's replacement in baseball will be Brad Showers, the longtime junior-varsity coach and brother of Lemon's trusted assistant, Greg Showers. Keeping it in-house was probably the right move with the sort of success that program has had, and you get the added bonus of Brad Showers already having coached all of the guys who will be on his roster in the next 2-3 years.

• This has been known for a couple of weeks now, but former Highland and Ridgeview coach Dave Purdy is the new boys basketball head man at Stockdale. It's a good fit because (1) Purdy is a darn good coach, having led Ridgeview to the Division III section title in 2011, and (2) because Purdy's son, Robbie, will be a junior next year and figures to play a key role for the Mustangs in the next two seasons. It also means that Dave Purdy, who didn't coach last year, spent a lot of time watching and learning about the team he'll now coach.

• Eddie Votaw, a former Centennial girls soccer coach, will replace David Atkinson as Stockdale's boys soccer coach.

• New athletic director Jim Keene and Stockdale's administration are still searching for two coaches, in girls basketball, where someone has to replace section wins leader Glenn Hager, and in wrestling, where Robert Fowler has left to become the athletic trainer at Garces.

That brings me to point No. 2. Fowler isn't just going to Garces to tape ankles and inspect injuries (not that there's anything wrong with that line of important work). The Rams are starting a wrestling program in the 2014-2015 school year, athletic director Lela Steiber said.

“We have a desire to have a complete athletic program, and this was kind of the only thing we didn’t have,” Steiber said. “There’s a demand for it at this school, too, so we’re trying to accomplish that.”
