UPDATED, 8:05 p.m. Monday: Well, that was fast. Based on what I'd heard from a couple of people at Stockdale, there was quite a buzz surrounding Kevin Beed as a strong candidate to be the Mustangs' new coach.
About 20 minutes ago, I got a message from Beed himself, saying he was not interested in the job and that retirement from coaching "suits me just fine."
OK then. Back to the drawing board.

UPDATED, 5:25 p.m. Monday: We finally have a statement from Stockdale, and it comes from principal Ramon Hendrix. Other than confirming that the Mustangs are looking for a new coach, it doesn't say much.

"We are thankful to Mike Snow for his contributions to the STHS football program over the last six years. We wish him well in his future endeavors.

"The search is on for a new head coach who will provide leadership for the Stockdale football program. This person, who will join an excellent team of coaches, will continue to provide positive experiences and strong character development for our student athletes in the tradition of excellence that has been established in Stockdale athletics for nearly 23 years."

The only new thing worth noting here is that Hendrix hints at Snow's assistant coaches, at least some of them, remaining on the coaching staff for the new coach. That all has to do with available teaching positions, of course, and I had heard that some of Snow's assistants weren't willing to work with anyone else. If Snow (who, like many coaches, is a P.E. teacher) and some of his assistants remained at Stockdale as teachers but weren't coaching, it would make hiring a new coach more difficult because a teaching position might not be available.

As for a new coach, one name I've heard bandied about is Kevin Beed, a longtime assistant at Stockdale and former All-Area football and basketball player at Garces. That would circumvent any problem with not having a staff position opening, because Beed is already an independent study teacher at Stockdale. The big "but" in that statement, however, is that Beed has no varsity head coaching experience. So it could be a gamble. Time will tell.

UPDATED, 1:10 p.m. Sunday: Mike Snow confirmed in a text that Stockdale has let him go as football coach. He sent me this statement:

"The administration and I did not share the same vision in regards to the importance of the football program, nor did we see eye to eye on what it takes to develop and maintain a quality, competitive program. Ultimately, our philosophies were just too different, therefore they decided to make a change."

I'm still haven't received any contact from Stockdale athletic director Jim Keene or principal Ramon Hendrix.

ORIGINAL POST (8:35 p.m. Saturday): Mike Snow has been fired from his position as Stockdale's football coach, multiple sources told The Californian on Saturday.

Snow just completed his sixth season as the Mustangs' coach. He was 35-31 (counting two forfeit losses) with two league championships, won in his first two years at Stockdale. Stockdale reached the Central Section Division I playoffs in five of Snow's six years, but they won just one playoff game.

Each of the past two seasons, Stockdale has been 5-5 in the regular season before losing a first-round playoff game.

Snow coached previous stops at North and Frontier. He was The Californian's 2001 Coach of the Year at North.

Neither Snow nor Stockdale athletic director Jim Keene could not be reached for comment.
