The Central Section South Area track and field meet on Wednesday featured four meet records, all in times that will make the high school stars who set them threats to medal — or to win — the CIF State Championships on May 31-June 1 in Clovis. BVarsity Live was there to capture the entire meet, and I've put together the meet-record highlights here. Enjoy, with myself and Louis Amestoy on commentary.
First up is sensational Stockdale junior Blake Haney, who leads the state in both boys distance races. First up was the 1,600 meters, in which Haney has run sub-4:10. Here he runs 4:14.30 without the help (this is a common theme here) of any competitor to push him in the last half of the race.
Up next is Ridgeview senior Ivan Gonzalez in the 800 meters, a race in which his early-season 1:52.02 once stood second in the nation this season. He hasn't improved upon that mark yet, but his 1:53.26 here was good enough for a meet record, passing former state champion and current Centennial coach, Vondre Armour. Both heats of the 800 are in this video — if you just want to see Gonzalez, skip forward to about the 4:15 mark.
The youngest runner to set a meet record Wednesday was Liberty sophomore Morganne Hill, who broke the meet and school record her friend, Kaulyn Lee-McNeill, set as a senior last year at 43.00. Hill runs 42.97 here.
Finally, we wind our way back to Haney, whose most impressive performance to date this year came in the 3,200 meters at the Arcadia Invitational, where he blistered 8:48.58, the fifth-fastest time in the nation this season. That was in one of the most loaded high school distance races ever seen. Here, he's running by himself again, and he still manages an impressive 9:17.41, again an area meet record.
Next up for track and field: The Central Section Masters Championships, May 18 in Clovis. Two weeks after that, the top three in the section return to Clovis for the state finals. You can browse all of the various area races at this link.
