Highland senior Derrick Duff, captain and leading scorer for the Scots boys basketball team, died in a car accident on Highway 101 early this morning.
Duff, 18, was laying in the back of a Jeep when the driver, another teen, lost control of the vehicle just after 2 a.m. this morning. Duff was thrown from the back. The students were driving back from a spring break trip to Pismo Beach. It was Duff's first time away from home alone.
You can read more about the accident from Californian news reporter James Burger's story.
It's said every time tragedy befells the sports world, but I'll repeat it here: We realize how unimportant the games really are when something like this happens. My thoughts and prayers are with Duff's family, including younger brother Derrius, who also plays on the Highland basketball team, and mother Valerie Mility.
