Sierra/Sequoia Division wrestling results
BY ZACH EWING Californian staff writer zewing@bakersfield.com
I've been tied up here in Madera all weekend, obviously, with the Yosemite Divisional, but the small schools held their own battle in Shafter. And what a battle it turned out to be on the team side of things. Selma's Joey Alvarez beat Wasco's Garret Johnson in an overtime heavyweight final to decide the team title, 221-215 in favor of the Bears. Johnson had the lead, our correspondent Steve Lynch reports, with seven seconds left in regulation when he was hit with a stalling call for the second time, tying the match.
To that point, both Selma and Wasco had won all four of their finals. State No. 1 Sean Medley of Wasco took care of business, as did most of the other favorites. Here are the results of the championship and third-place matches.
Team standings
1. Selma 221, 2. Wasco 215, 3. Fresno-Washington Union 192.5, 4. Dos Palos 181, 5. Firebaugh 180, 6. Corcoran 141.5, 7. Mendota 128, 8. Caruthers 126.5, 9. Dinuba 122, 10. Kingsburg 120.5, 11.
