UPDATED, 12:49 a.m.: Final scorelist below, with a few games to play tomorrow, including a big small-school game, Kern Valley at Big Bear. For now, this week's stock report:
Trending up: Liberty, Garces, Bakersfield, Independence, Centennial, Frontier, South, Bakersfield Christian, Taft, Shafter
Holding steady: Golden Valley, North, Arvin, Wasco, East, Delano
Trending down: Ridgeview, West, Stockdale, Mira Monte, Chavez, Kennedy
UPDATED, 10:00 p.m.: Garces has its third interception of the night, this one from Dominic Frasch on a long ball overthrow. Garces has it with 3:23 left and can run the clock out from here if they continue to move the ball. They do, and the kneel-downs come with about a minute to go. Final score here: Garces 41, Stockdale 26.
UPDATED, 9:55 p.m.: Stockdale gets a big first down on a personal-foul call against Garces, a late hit. So Stockdale with it at the 35. Allen to pass. He's hit by Jake Stuart. Ball pops up. Picked off by David Grimm and nothing but green in front of him! 35 yards, and Garces has its second pick-six of the night! It's 41-26 Rams with 3:23 to play.
UPDATED, 9:51 p.m.: Stockdale forced to punt here. Garces getting great pressure in the backfield on this series, with Tanner Henderson batting a pass away and Matthew Sanders getting a third-down sack. Short punt, and Garces gets it at the Stockdale 45 with 8:57 left and a chance to put this thing away.
Third and 11, and Pavletich rolls out and hits Croney wide open. First down inside the red zone. But Stockdale is starting to bottle up Sheldon Croney, and it's third-and-long again. This time, Pavletich finds Frasch, but he's lit up by Devon Kelley as soon as he catches the short ball. Fourth down. Garces calls timeout, up 34-26 with 4:26 to play. Out of the timeout, Garces throws incomplete, with Pavletich under pressure. Stockdale has 4:19 and two timeouts to try to tie this game. Good finish coming.
Final scores: Bakersfield 55, Buchanan 7; Independence 51, Mira Monte 0.
UPDATED, 9:35 p.m.: Croney in the wildcat, and he picks up about 6 on third-and-7. Garces will go for it. Croney again. I think he's got it. Flag down, too. It's a first down and a facemask on Stockdale. First down at the 1. Two plays later, Jake Pavletich gets the touchdown on a 1-yard keeper. PAT good, and Garces extends its lead to 34-26 with 10:22 to play.
UPDATED, 9:30 p.m.: End of the third quarter here, with Garces driving inside the Stockdale 10. They'll face third-and-7 from the 9 when play resumes. The Rams caught a break on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against the Stockdale sideline a few minutes ago. Dominic Frasch lost the ball shortly after he went down, and Stockdale's coaches were arguing that the Mustangs should have been given the ball. Instead, what would have been third-and-11 for Garces turns into first-and-10 up at the 12. Anyway, big play coming up for Garces.
UPDATED, 9:22 p.m.: First punt of the second half, and only the third of the night, coming up after Garces forces a three-and-out. Rams get the ball back at their 25 with 4:34 to play in the third quarter.
Elsewhere: Bakersfield 55, Buchanan 7. Independence 44, Mira Monte 0. South 38, Foothill 3. Centennial 17, Santa Barbara 0 at half. This is the only close game going on, apparently.
UPDATED, 9:17 p.m.: Garces faces third-and-17 from its 37-yard line. Pavletich will throw it deep — and Frasch is wide open. He has it at the Stockdale 27. How did the Mustangs let that happen? Next play, Croney for 12 to the 15. Next play, Frasch around end. Cuts it back. Touchdown. 63 yards in three plays after Stockdale had Garces backed up. PAT is no good here, well short, and Garces settles for a 27-26 lead with 6:20 to play in the third quarter.
UPDATED, 9:12 p.m.: With the homecoming show still blaring through the speakers, Stockdale gets the ball to start the second half in good field position at its 44. It's third-and-14, and a draw play to Adarius Rowel. This worked on third and long in the first half, and it's working here again! Rowel has a burst up the middle. Makes one more man miss, and he's gone. 60 yards to the house. PAT wide right. Stockdale re-takes the lead, 26-21.
UPDATED, 9:06 p.m.: Halftime statistics:
GARCES (176 total yards): Jake Pavletich 4-5 passing, 64 yards, INT
Sheldon Croney 12-85, 2 TDs; 1-18 receiving
Dom Frasch 3-27 rushing, 1-2 receiving
STOCKDALE (240 total yards): Drew Allen 3-7 passing, 91 yards, TD, INT
Adarius Rowel 10-64
Anthony Wood 15-45, TD; 1-8 receiving
Xavier Chisholm 5-40 rushing, TD; 1-14 receiving, TD
UPDATED, 8:40 p.m.: Garces answers quickly again, getting a big 18-yard pass play from Pavletich to Jack Lundy, then some nice running plays from Dom Frasch and Sheldon Croney. Down to the 1, where Croney is in the wildcat. Easy touchdown. PAT from Joshua Hedden is good, and for the second time tonight, the Rams lead by a point, 21-20.
1:13 left and all three timeout for Stockdale, which collects a short pooch kick at its own 47. But the Mustangs aren't a team that moves the ball all that quickly, and an illegal block in the back is going to push them back here. Stockdale uses one timeout but doesn't get aggressive and will settle for a 21-20 deficit at the break. Mustangs do get the ball first in the second half.
Elsewhere: Bakersfield all over Buchanan, 41-0 at halftime. Centennial leads Santa Barbara 7-0 after a quarter. Liberty leads Ridgeview 27-7. Same score, Frontier up 27-7 over West late in the half. And a stunning score from up north: Clovis West 17, Bullard 0. That's a consensus top-10 team going down big in the first half.
UPDATED, 8:27 p.m.: Stockdale is finding the big-play well fruitful here. A 69-yard pass and run from Drew Allen to Sam Ojeriakhi down to the 5. Face-mask penalty on Ojeriakhi, and then another personal foul on Stockdale on the next play. All of a sudden, it's first-and-21 back at the 31. Now Xavier Chisholm on the reverse, a beautiful cutback to get past Frasch, and he's gone — 31 yards for the go-ahead score. Stockdale will go for two again, and this time Anthony Wood has the conversion. 20-14 Mustangs, 3:42 to play
UPDATED, 8:17 p.m.: Garces works its way inside the 15 and then commits two penalties to set up second and long. Jake Pavletich overthrows his man — and Devon Kelley makes a stunning one-handed interception! What an acrobatic play made there, and a bullet dodged for the Mustangs. They then get a 24-yard gain from Adarius Rowel on a draw play on third-and-14, but the drive stalls after that. First punt of the night coming up, and Garces will take over at its 36.
Rams commit another big penalty on a third-down play and now it's third-and-23. Screen play to Croney, who has some room up the right side. He's forced out, though, with 5 yards to go, and the Rams will have to punt. Final five minutes of the half now.
Liberty leads Ridgeview 13-7, Bakersfield 28-0 over Buchanan. South 9-3 over Foothill.
UPDATED, 8:01 p.m.: Stockdale answers nicely, with a 73-yard drive aided by a third-down personal-foul penalty on Garces. Then the Mustangs' three-headed monster at running back started to do some work, with Adarius Rowel, Xavier Chisolm and Anthony Wood, who finished it off with a 1-yard touchdown run. Stockdale chases points and goes for two, and George Borba makes a nice tackle to deny Adarius Rowel. So it's 14-12 Garces with 1:13 left in the first quarter.
Nice kickoff return from Jack Scott for Garces, and the Rams pick up a first down before the quarter expires. Now Croney breaks a big one with seconds left in the quarter, getting to the second level and rumbling all the way inside the 20. Rams didn't have the ball much in the first, but they do have a 14-12 lead and the ball in the red zone as we head to the second.
UPDATED, 7:52 p.m.: Disaster for Stockdale — Drew Allen's second-down pass goes right to Allen Eschete at the 45. Eschete goes untouched into the end zone for a 14-6 lead. Stockdale has had issues with turnovers under Mike Snow, and that's a big one. 4:43 left.
Elsewhere, Bakersfield already out to a 14-0 lead on Buchanan. South over Foothill, 7-3. Liberty up 7-0 on the first play from scrimmage against Ridgeview, a 28-yard touchdown pass from Josh Medina to Hanz Harker.
UPDATED, 7:44 p.m.: Garces answers right back. This time, Dominic Frasch comes up to take a short kickoff and gets a burst of speed up the right sideline for a 36-yard return to the Stockdale 42. Sheldon Croney gains 12 on the next play, and then on a third-and-10, Jake Pavletich hits Matthew Sanders for a 26-yard gain to the 4. Play-action pass, and Sanders was wide open. From there, Croney cuts back and goes in barely touched. PAT is good, and Garces leads 7-6. The answer came in just 1:50.
UPDATED, 7:38 p.m.: We're broadcasting live, and we have a big break already in this one. Stockdale pooch-kicks the opening kickoff and it bounces back to the Mustangs, who recover an onside kick of sorts at the Garces 35. Stockdale grinds its way down to the 14, and from there, Drew Allen hits a wide-open Xavier Chisolm for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead. The snap was low on the PAT, and Brendan Silva never got the kick off the ground. It's blocked by his own men, and the Mustangs will settle for a 6-0 lead.
UPDATED, 7:09 p.m.: The BVarsity crew has arrived at Stockdale, where Homecoming festivities are wrapping up and the Mustangs are about to take on Garces in an intriguing interleague game at 7:30 p.m.
We'll be broadcasting live on bakersfield.com, but because of some technical issues, we're not quite up yet. We should be good to go by kickoff time, which is slated for 7:30 on the dot. I'll update back when we're rolling, and I'll also tweet it out. Follow me @zewing.
ORIGINAL POST: It's not quite like last week, but there are some interesting games in Week 4 football tonight, starting with our Game of the Week, Garces at Stockdale. As I wrote in this morning's paper, both teams are at a bit of a crossroads heading into this one and with league play on the horizon. The winner will feel pretty good about itself, either heading into a bye week (Garces) or with one non-league game to play (Stockdale, vs. winless Buchanan).
Elsewhere, there's Liberty, shooting for a 5-0 non-league season, heading to Ridgeview, and Bakersfield (vs. Buchanan) and Frontier (at West) both try to rebound after disappointing losses in big games last week. Centennial also has a big intersection battle with Santa Barbara, and South will try to remain unbeaten at Foothill.
Check out this post from yesterday to get much more Week 4 information.
We'll begin our live broadcast of Garces-Stockdale on bakersfield.com at 7 p.m. As you watch, follow along the rest of the action here in another open window — I'll update the scorelist below as much as possible throughout the night.
