Most local high school football teams will play the same schedule this coming fall as they did last year, only with home and road venues reversed — Garces opens with San Luis Obispo at home, for instance, and Stockdale gets Stockton-St. Mary's at the Mustangs' place, while West will travel to East, instead of the other way around.
But Bakersfield High, in its efforts to increase strength of schedule and impress the CIF bowl selection committee, took on a few one-year contracts last year. That meant the Drillers needed to scramble to find one-year deals for 2013, too.
They appear to have come out with another dynamite schedule. It opens on the road, on a Thursday, against a marquee opponent in Southern California and continues with a game against an undefeated section champion in Week 1, a one-loss section champion in Week 2 and then a team that lost in the Division I state championship bowl game in Week 3.
The Drillers, of course, bring back a star-studded senior class that will be led by quarterback Asauni Rufus, who already has a scholarship offer from Cal Poly, and wide receiver/defensive back Kevin Hayes, who's a dynamite athlete with a plethora of big-time Division I interest.
Buckle up, Drillers fans. (I'll have a note on some other teams' schedules later in the week, but again, if you're curious, most of those are carbon copies of last year in reverse).
