Wrestling: Yosemite Divisional live blog, Day 2

BY ZACH EWING Californian staff writer zewing@bakersfield.com

UPDATED, 3:58 p.m.: The rest of the medal-round results, including a fourth meeting in 11 days between Frontier's John Popek and Centennial's Carson Crawford, this one with third place at heavyweight on the line. Popek won them all, this one a tight 4-2 decision.

I'll have a new thread for the finals, which start in a little over an hour.

170: Caz Ashijian, Bullard, maj dec. Juan Valladores, Madera South, 10-0; Ryan Holmes, Stockdale, dec. Josh Bailey, Frontier, 8-6; Gregory Robinson, Edison, maj dec Angel Robles, Lemoore, 11-2

182: Ritchie Brandt, Bullard, pinned Jacob Pedraza, Hanford West, 4:53; DeAndre Daise, Lemoore, inj def Kyle Pope, Bakersfield; Gerardo Gutierrez, Madera, dec. Brooks Ribiero, Mission Oak, 4-1

195: Nate Lopez, Lemoore, dec. Lenny Pedraza, Madera, 2-0; Jordan Pyzer, Clovis North, dec. Luiz Placido, Madera South, 8-3; Cameron Willis, Liberty, pinned Raul Rocha, Fresno, 3:43

HWT: John Popek, Frontier, dec. Carson Crawford, Centennial, 4-2; Narciso Juarez, Sanger, pinned Brophy Haitt, Golden West, 1:50; Johnathan Roa, Lemoore, dec. Mustaff Mahmood, Clovis West, 4-1.

UPDATED, 3:19 p.m.: A few more results below. Good for West High, which gets a seventh-place victory from Miguel Trejo and now has two Masters qualifiers. Not bad for a team that finished third in the weakest league in the division.

152: Coleman Hammond, Bakersfield, inj def Colby Thompson, Clovis; Jason Medley, Mission Oak, dec. Miguel Ruiz, Madera, 2-1; Miguel Trejo, West, pinned Jorge Elisarraraz, Sanger, 3:22

160: Sebastian Suikowsky, Hoover, dec. Charles Yilan, Madera South, 3-2; Kyle Shepherd, Frontier, inj def Jaime Martinez, Lemoore; Jason Zechini, Mt. Whitney, dec. David Jepsen, Central

UPDATED, 3:07 p.m.: Here are some more medal results. You'll notice Dominic Kincaid's victory over Centennial's Chase Fiddler at 145 — that puts all 14 Clovis wrestlers into the Masters. That's quite a feat, and it keeps the Cougars right on track to not only win the state championship but do it in dominant fashion.
Here are more medal matches, in 3rd-5th-7th order:

132: Micah Cruz, Bakersfield, inj def Patrick Phaysamone, Clovis East; Tyler Zimmer, Clovis West, maj. dec. Christian Rodriguez, Reedley, 16-2; Conner Francis, Buchanan, dec. Matthew Holmes, Lemoore, 7-0

138: Jason Ladd, Clovis, dec. Josue Hernandez, Madera South, 4-3; Chris Garcia, Clovis West, inj def Dillen Rocha, Lemoore; Daniel Lopez, Kennedy, maj dec Rosario Sanchez, Sanger, 22-9

145: Tyler Hartsfield, Liberty, dec. James Toro, West, 6-2; Jorge Perez, Edison, maj dec Oscar Corona, Foothill, 9-1; Dominic Kincaid, Clovis, dec. Chase Fiddler, Centennnial, 12-6

UPDATED, 2:46 p.m.: At 126 pounds, Frontier's Izaiah Ozuna is going to reverse a loss from last week's SWYL championship. He's up 9-1 late on Bryce Martin, who is about to drop to 0-3 today after reaching the semifinals last night. It's a battle for third between Foothill's William Saavedra and Buchanan's Kyler Hansen. Hansen got some late points to win that one 4-2. Ozuna finishes off his match, 14-4. An impressive win over Martin, who was seeded third and will need to regroup going into next week.
Seventh-place match here is Central's Nick Deorian and Mission Oak's Reiley Johnstone.
Sorry, got distracted there by basketball seedings. I'll prepare a post on those in a bit. First, here are the medal results thus far (third listed first, then fifth, then seventh).

106: Joey Cisneros, Redwood, dec. Julian Gaytan, Clovis, 7-5; Matt Gamble, Monache, pinned Marce Velasquez, Foothill, 5:00; Javier Jimenez, Porterville, maj. dec. Matt Gamble, Monache, 17-4

113: Seth Hood, Monache, dec. Jason Delacruz, Buchanan, 1-0; Sean Williams, Lemoore, dec. Chris Tamez, Clovis East, 3-0; Daniel Ruiz, Madera, dec. Arik Onsurez, Bakersfield, 4-3

120: Matt Ontiveros, Central, inj def Oscar Marin, Bakersfield; Abel Contreras, Porterville, inj def Delano Headrix, Mission Oak; Jose Navarro, Madera, pinned Alejandro Jimenez, Buchanan, 4:36

126: Kyler Hansen, Buchana, dec. William Saavedra, Foothill, 4-2; Izaiah Ozuna, Foothill, maj. dec. Bryce Martin, 14-4; Nick Deorian, Central, pinned Reiley Johnstone, Mission Oak, 3:46

UPDATED, 2:13 p.m.: At 113, Bakersfield's Arik Onsurez will try to get through the seventh-place match against Madera's Daniel Ruiz. Third place is up for ggrabs for Monache's Seth Hood and Buchanan's Jason Delacruz, and Lemoore's Seam Williams and Clovis East's Chris Tamez battle for fifth.
No score in the first period for ONsurez and Ruiz. Ruiz with an escape to make it 1-0 in the second.Onsurez now working for a takedown after an excellent sprawl, but Ruiz holds on and a stalemate is called. Hood leads Delcruz 1-0 for third after two, and it's 2-0 Sean Williams after two for fifth.
Wild shot from Onsurez goes nowhere, and it's 1-0 heading to the third. Onsurez bottom. Ruiz climbs up high on his head, but Onsurez can't shuck him off. Ruiz has the legs in, and Onsurez needs to get out. Out of bounds for a restart. A minute to go.
Seth Hood collects a couple of nearfall points and beats Delacruz for third. Williams finishes his own 3-0 decision for fifth. Late reversal for Onsurez! But now Ruiz reverses back and wins in the final seconds! What a finish, and it doesn't go Bakersfield's way. Another eighth-place finish.

UPDATED, 2:01 p.m.: We're down to three mats and ready to start the medal rounds. The third-place matches will be right in front of me, then the fifth-placers and seventh-placers. You could make a very good argument that the only one that really matters here is the seventh-placers, though, considering that the winners there qualify for Masters and losers would be an alternate and likely won't wrestle next week.
At 106 pounds, that's the situation facing Bakersfield's Carlos Herrera and Porterville's Javier Jimenez. Only one gets to Masters — where, by the way, they'll be joined by a pretty good crop of Sierra/Sequoia Division 106-pounders. Jimenez takes down Herrera near the edge of the circle for a 2-0 lead. Third place here is between Clovis' Julian Gaytan and Redwood's Joey Cisneros, and fifth is Foothill's Marco Velasquez against Monache's Matt Gamble, who has a 4-0 lead. Another takedown before the first period ends for Jimenez, and he takes a 4-1 lead into the second.
Hood has complete control, up 9-0 and scoring nearfall. A takedown on the middle mat for Joey Cisneros puts him up 6-2 on Julian Gaytan. And Carlos Herrera looks doomed to be an alternate: He's down 8-2 late in the second period. Only close match here is for third. Escape for Gaytan in the third makes it 7-5. He'll hold on and win it, 7-5.
Pin at 4:59 for Matt Gamble, who takes fifth over Marco Velasquez. And Jimenez finishes off a major decision of Carlos Herrera, 17-4.

UPDATED, 1:33 p.m.: Final consolation semifinal results. We'll be starting medal matches shortly.

182: Ritchie Brandt, Bullard, dec. DeAndre Daise, Lemoore, 5-4; Jacob Pedraza, Hanford West, inj def Kyle Pope, Bakersfield

195: Nate Lopez, Lemoore, dec. Jordan Pyzer, Clovis North, 7-3; Lenny Pedraza, Madera, dec. Luiz Placido, Madera South, 10-6

220: Otillo Carillio, Edison, pinned Jordan Olgin, Foothill, 1:30; Eric Mendoza, Madera, dec. Matt Weiss, Clovis, 9-6

HWT: John Popek, Frontier, pinned Brophy Haitt, Golden West, 0:31; Carson Crawford, Centennial, dec. Narciso Juarez, Sanger, 2-0

UPDATED, 1:21 p.m.: For those of you looking for basketball playoff seeds, I'll post them on Twitter when they're released. I'll try to get up a post here later, too.
For now, more consolation semifinal results:

138: Jason Ladd, Clovis, dec. Dillen Rocha, Lemoore, 9-3; Josue Hernandez, Madera South, maj. dec. Chris Garcia, Clovis West, 16-7

145: Tyler Hartsfield, Liberty, dec. Jorge Perez, Edison, 7-4; James Toro, West, dec. Oscar Corona, Foothill, 6-3

152: Colby Thompson, Clovis, dec. Miguel Ruiz, Madera, 1-0; Coleman Hammond, Bakersfield, pinned Jason Medley, Mission Oak, 1:42

160: Charles Yilan, Madera South, dec. Kyle Shepherd, Frontier, 6-2; Sebastian Suikowski, Hoover, dec. Jaime Martinez, Lemoore, 11-6

170: Juan Valladares, Madera South, pinned Ryan Holmes, Stockdale, 3:45; Caz Ashijian, Bullard, pinned Josh Bailey, Frontier, 2:19

UPDATED, 1:04 p.m.: Zooming through the consolation semifinals. Here are some lowerweight results. Again, winners wrestle for third, losers wrestle for fifth.

106: Julian Gaytan, Clovis, pinned Marco Velasquez, Foothill, 0:55; Joey Cisneros, Redwood, dec. Matt Gamble, Monache, 8-4

113: Seth Hood, Monache, dec. Chris Tamez, Clovis East, 3-0; Jason Delacruz, Buchanan, dec. Sean Williams, Lemoore, 7-6

120: Matthew Ontiveros, Central, inj def Delano Headrix, Mission Oak; Oscar Marin, Bakersfield, dec. Abel Contreras, Porterville, 4-2

126: Kyler Hansen, Buchanan, pinned Izaiah Ozuna, Frontier, 3:39; William Saavedra, Foothill, dec. Bryce Martin, Bakersfield, 3-2

132: Patrick Phaysamone, Clovis East, tech fall Christian Rodriguez, Reedley, 17-2; Micah Cruz, Bakersfield, pinned Tyler Zimmer, Clovis West, 2:31

UPDATED, 12:55 p.m.: Right now, the consolation semifinals are on mat, pitting the consolation survivors against semifinal losers. Winners here wrestle for third; losers wrestle for fifth. Either way, everybody here is in Masters, which means you start seeing some injury defaults from kids who are banged up and want to rest for next week. After this, we'll have the medal round, including the all-important seventh-place match that decides the final qualifier.
The finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. Here is the list of matchups:

106: Miguel Martinez, Madera, vs. Adrian Camposano, Central
113: Mason Pengilly, Porterville, vs. Jonas Gaytan, Clovis
120: Daniel Gaytan, Clovis, vs. Brandon Rodriguez, Clovis West
126: Vicente Hernandez, Clovis, vs. Michael Knoblauch, Clovis West
132: Martin Sandoval, Porterville, vs. Matt Gay, Clovis
138: Natrelle Demison, Bakersfield, vs. Racelis Cardenas, Buchanan
145: Maxx Ramirez, Bakersfield, vs. Osamuyimen Osunde, Lemoore
152: Isiah Martinez, Lemoore, vs. Kyle Perreault, Clovis East
160: Adrian Salas, Clovis, vs. A.J. Fierro, Bakersfield
170: Silas Nacita, Bakersfield, vs. Zach Nevills, Clovis
182: Nikko Reyes, Clovis West, vs. Ryan Davies, Clovis
195: Dakota Gordon, Clovis, vs. Jack Murphy, Frontier
220: Arnold Salinas, Fresno, vs. Cortes Morales, Clovis West
HWT: Nick Nevills, Clovis, vs. Rudy Amaya, Foothill

If you're keeping track, that's an astounding total of nine Clovis wrestlers in the finals. Almost like a dual meet. Bakersfield and Clovis West each have four in the finals. That kind of Cougars dominance is reflected in the team score:
1. Clovis 313; 2. Bakersfield 201.5; 3. Clovis West 158.5; 4. Lemoore 153.5; 5. Madera 127.5; 6. Buchanan 120.5; 7. Porterville 104.5; 8. Frontier 102; 9. Foothill 97; 10. Madera South 94.5

UPDATED, 12:45 p.m.: Last-second takedown for Cortes Morales of Clovis West against Madera's Eric Mendoza to garner an upset in the 220-pound semifinals, 3-2. Morales, the No. 6 seed, will meet top seed Arnold Salinas of Fresno in the championship.
Now at heavyweight, it's Foothill's Rudy Amaya against Sanger's Narciso Juarez and Frontier's John Popek with a tough test against defending state champion Nick Nevills of Clovis. Nevills leads 3-0 midway through the second period there, and make it 5-0 after another takedown. Very, very quick on his feet for a heavyweight.
An escape for Amaya gives him a 1-0 lead in the other semifinal in the second. Juarez more aggressive from neutral here, but he's out of bounds before he gets the takedown. He does get a stalling call on Amaya, which could be key.
Nevills pins Popek early in the third period, at 4:28. Now Juarez down in the third period and looking for the tie. But Amaya has him broken down well. A minute left now. Amaya very good from top. He's broken Juarez down again, and he keeps working. No stalling coming. Amaya is going to hang on, 1-0. He'll face Nick Nevills tonight.

195 consolation: Luiz Placido, Madera South, pinned Raul Rocha, Fresno, 3:19; Jordan Pyzer, Clovis North, dec. Cameron Willis, Liberty, 6-5

220 semifinals: Arnold Salinas, Fresno, Maj. dec. Otillo Carillio, Edison, 16-6; Cortes Morales, Clovis West, dec. Eric Mendoza, Madera, 2-1

220 consolation: Jordan Olgin, Foothill, dec. Andrew Sanchez, Golden West, 9-8; Matt Weiss, Clovis, pinned Joseph Santos-Valles, Hoover, 4:49

HWT semifinals: Nick Nevills, Clovis, pinned John Popek, Frontier, 5:28; Rudy Amaya, Foothill, dec. Narciso Juarez, Sanger, 1-0

HWT consolation: Brophy Haitt, Golden West, dec. Johnathan Roa, Lemoore, 6-3; Carson Crawford, Centennial, dec. Mustaff Mahmood, Clovis West, 2-1

UPDATED, 12:16 p.m.: The only 182-pound semifinal is over quickly, with Clovis West's defending state champion Nikko Reyes pinning Lemoore's DeAndre Daise. So Reyes will meet Clovis' Ryan Davies in the final tonight after Pope's default.
At 195, it's Frontier's Jack Murphy against Lemoore's Nate Lopez in what should be a good one. The other semi is Clovis' Dakota Gordon against Madera's Lenny Pedraza. Murphy works for a first-period takedown and leads 2-0. Escape Lopez, and Murphy works a fireman's shot for another takedown. He looks good. 4-1 after a period.
An escape for Lopez makes it 4-2, and now he's taken Murphy down to his back! What a turnaround. Murphy fights off his back but not before three nearfall points make it 7-4 Lopez. Six straight points for Lemoore ahs flipped this match around. Final 30 seconds of the period. Murphy could use at least an escape, and he gets it. 7-5. That's the score headed to the third, with Murphy on bottom.
In the other semi, an easy pin for Dakota Gordon of Clovis over Madera's Pedraza.
Now Murphy reverses and ties the match 7-7. Great back-and-forth action here. Murphy has an arm pinned and will look for nearfall. A minute left. All Lopez needs for the lead is an escape. Stalemate called with 57 seconds left and Lopez needs injury time. Off the restart, Murphy wants to go neutral. He'll give Lopez an 8-7 lead and work for a takedown. He's got it, on another fireman's shot. That's his go-to move. Final 20 seconds now andLopez needs an escape to tie. Murphy breaks him down, though, and time is going to run out. 9-8, Murphy survives despite that big hiccup in the second period.

170 consolation: Ryan Holmes, Stockdale, pinned Gregory Robinson, Edison, 2:41; Josh Bailey, Frontier, dec. Angel Robles, Lemoore, 5-3

182 semifinals: Nikko Reyes, Clovis West, pinned DeAndre Daise, Lemoore, 1:40; Ryan Davies, Clovis, inj. def. Kyle Pope, Bakersfield

182 consolation: Jacob Pedraza, Hanford West, pinned Brooks Ribiero, Mission Oak, 3:17; Ritchie Brandt, Bullard, dec. Gerardo Gutierrez, Madera, 5-4

195 semifinals: Dakota Gordon, Clovis, pinned Lenny Pedraza, Madera, 1:18; Jack Murphy, Frontier, dec. Nate Lopez, Lemoore, 9-8

UPDATED, 12:01 p.m.: Easy victory in the 160 semifinals for Clovis' Adrian Salas, who puts an end to Sebastian Suikowski's run at 160 with a third-period pin. He's into the final against a real Cinderella story, Bakersfield's A.J. Fierro, who beats Frontier's Kyle Shepherd 2-1 in a 6 vs. 7 semifinal and reaches the final. Two weeks ago, Fierro was the JV, stuck behind Hunter Hodges. Now he's in the Yosemite Division final.
Now at 170, it's Clovis' Zach Nevills against Bullard's Caz Ashijian, and Bakersfield's Silas Nacita facing Madera South's Juan Valladares. I think everyone here expects Nevills and Nacita to meet in the final in what would be their third meeting of the year. They're 1-1 right now. Nevills is up 5-0 on Ashjian after a takedown and nearfall in the first period, and Nacita leads Hernandez 2-0 after a period.
Escape for Nacita and now a takedown makes it 5-0, and Nevills has the same on the other mat for an 8-0 lead. They're on a collision course for the finals. Now a reversal for Hernandez, but Nacita reverses right back and leads 7-2 after two periods.
Now in the third, Nacita has an escape and takedown for a 10-2, now 10-3. Nevills is cruising, up 8-1 and riding out Ashijian. No question who the two best guys in this weight class are. Finals will be 11-1 for Nevills and 14-4 for Nacita.
Bakersfield's Kyle Pope, who needed stiches on a cut on his forehead after his quarterfinal last night, is going to default out of his semifinal, so advance Clovis' Ryan Davies to the final there.

160 semifinals: Adrian Salas, Clovis, pinned Sebastian Suikowsky, Hoover, 4:54; A.J. Fierro, Bakersfield, dec. Kyle Shepherd, Frontier, 2-1

160 consolation: Jaime Martinez, Lemoore, pinned Jason Zechini, Mt. Whitney, 3:03; Charles Yilan, Madera South, dec. David Jepsen, Central, 6-0

170 semifinals: Silas Nacita, Bakersfield, maj. dec. Jose Hernandez, Madera South, 14-4; Zach Nevills, Clovis, maj. dec. Caz Ashijian, Bullard, 11-1

UPDATED, 11:41 a.m.: Three locals in the 145-pound semifinals, but Foothill's Oscar Corona is in early trouble against Lemoore's Osamuyimen Osunde. Osunde has an early 5-0 lead and Corona just had to fight off his back.
In the other semifinal, it's a rematch of last week's SWYL final between Maxx Ramirez and Liberty's Tyler Hartsfield. Hartsfield won 9-7 in an upset last week; this one is tight late. Hartsfield up 4-3, but here's a Ramirez takedown for the lead. Now we're knotted up 5-5. Takedown Ramirez, and he adds another one late. It'll be a narrow 9-8 decision for Ramirez, who raises his hands in the air, pleased that he's reversed that loss from last week.
He'll meet Lemoore's Osunde, who finishes off Corona 9-0.
Now for 145, where two of the country's top juniors are the top two seeds. Early takedown for Lemoore's Isiah Martinez, the top seed, on Clovis' Colby Thompson. Hammond is in a dogfight with Clovis East's Kyle Perreault. He just had a first-period takedown to take a 5-3 lead; it's 5-4 after Perreault escapes.
Martinez is dominating on the other mat. Thompson fights off his back but is down 7-2 after one.
5-4 for Hammond headed to the second. Escape Perreault to tie it up, and now the Timberwolf has a takedown for a 7-5 lead. Hammond escapes, but he's down 7-6 and in a dogfight. Hammond finishes a takedown but he's out of bounds first. Now a deep double-leg shot, and Hammond re-takes an 8-7 lead. That's the score after two.
Martinez leads 12-3 for Lemoore in the third period there. He's really something to watch. Really, really athletic. Now Hammond down in the third period in his match, and he escapes for a 9-7 lead. Perreault needs a takedown to tie. He's got it, and it's 9-9. Perreault again gives him an escape. hammond leads 10-9, but Perreault thinks he can get takedowns. Instead it's Hammond who shoots and nearly has the takedown — but Perreault spins around on his back and gets the takedown! Wow, what a move, and Clovis East leads 11-10. Hammond needs to get out — but now Perreault has a cradle locked up. A gasp from the crowd, and now a pin! Perreault pulls the upset and will get his shot at Martinez, who pinned Thompson late.

145 semifinals: Maxx Ramirez, Bakersfield, dec. Tyler Hartsfield, Liberty, 9-8; Osamuyimen Osunde, Lemoore, maj. dec. Oscar Corona, Foothill, 9-0

145 consolation: James Toro, West, dec. Dominic Kincaid, Clovis, 6-5; Jorge Perez, Edison, dec. Chase Fiddler, Centennial, 7-6

152 semifinals: Isiah Martinez, Lemoore, pinned Colby Thompson, Clovis, 5:28; Kyle Perreault, Clovis East, pinned Coleman Hammond, Bakersfield, 5:28

152 consolation: Miguel Ruiz, Madera, maj dec Miguel Trejo, West, 16-5; Jason Medley, Mission Oak, pinned Jorge Elisarraraz, Sanger, 2:33

UPDATED, 11:25 a.m.: Big upset brewing at 132, with Porterville's No. 4 seed, Martin Sandoval, up 6-0 after some second-period nearfall on top seed Patrick Phaysamone of Clovis East. Into the third period now.
The other semifinal is another Bakersfield-Clovis showdown, Micah Cruz against Matt Gay in a 2 vs. 3 matchup. Scoreless first period, now Cruz out for an escape and a 1-0 lead in the second. Very cautious from neutral. Now third period and Gay is bottom. This is where Cruz might have an edge in this match. Nope, not this time. Gay squirms out and reverses for a 2-1 lead. 1:22 left, and Cruz needs another escape to tie the match. Gay will actually choose neutral and give him the point. 2-2 into the final 1:15.
On the other mat, Sandoval has finished off his upset, 6-0 over Phaysamone. Now who will he face? 45 seconds left now Out of bounds we go. Gay has a shot in, but Cruz has sprawled out. Scramble late. Gay can't quite finish. Overtime.
Locked up right away. Gay shoots but there's nothing there. Cruz working on thehead. Now a single leg for Gay. 10 seconds left. Cruz trying to survive. He can't. Takedown in the final three seconds. 4-2 victory for Matt Gay in a mild upset.
Meanwhile, West's James Toro has qualifed for Masters at 145. He pinned Clovis' Dominic Kincaid, who now becomes the first Cougar at risk for not qualifying. He'll wrestle for seventh later.

132 semifinals: Martin Sandoval, Porterville, dec. Patrick Phaysamone, Clovis East, 6-0; Matt Gay, Clovis, dec. Micah Cruz, Bakersfield, 4-2 OT

132 consolation: Christian Rodriguez, Reedley, dec. Matt Holmes, Lemoore; Tyler Zimmer, Clovis West, dec. Conner Francis, Buchanan, 6-1

138 semifinals: Natrelle Demison, Bakersfield, dec. Jason Ladd, Clovis, 4-1; Racelis Cardenas, Buchanan, dec. Jose Hernandez, Madera South, 3-2

138 consolation: Dillen Rocha, Lemoore, tech fall Daniel Lopez, Kennedy, 15-0; Chris Garcia, Clovis West, tech fall Rosario Sanchez, Sanger, 16-1

UPDATED, 11:11 a.m.: Make it three Clovis wrestlers in finals. Vicente Hernandez finishes off Frontier's Izaiah Ozuna, 4-0. He'll face Clovis West's Michael Knoblauch in another all-TRAC final tonight.
There was a mistake with bout sheets, so we're wrestling 138 semifinals first, then 132. At 138, it'll be Buchanan's Racelis Cardenas against Madera South's Jose Hernandez and Bakersfield's Natrelle Demison, the top seed, against Clovis' Jason Ladd.
Scoreless first period between Demison and Ladd. Demison has a reversal to start the second, though. Escape Ladd but takedown Demison makes it 4-1 for Bakersfieldf. In the other semifinal, Hernandez's second-period escape ties him with Cardenas, 2-2. The period will end that way, and Cardenas is bottom to star the third, now out for a 3-2 lead.
Demison in control of Ladd from top position. Ladd finally to his feet late in the period but can't get away. Second period will run out. Cardenas holds on 3-2. Demison won; didn't see the exact final. It'll be Demison vs. Cardenas in the 138-pound finals.
Interesting situation in the 120-pound consolation: Mission Oak's Delano Headrix got knocked out cold in what was ruled an illegal slam by Madera's Jose Navarro. Headrix has to leave the tournament, but he gets the victory by efault in what was a tied match; he'll default to sixth place and, if he recovers, have a chance to qualify for state next week. Navarro will have to wrestle for seventh.

120 consolation: Delano Headrix, Mission Oak, def. Jose Navarro, Madera; Abel Contreras, Porterville, pinned Alejandro Jimenez, Buchanan, 3:50

126 semifinals: Vicente Hernandez, Clovis, dec. Izaiah Ozuna, Frontier, 4-0; Michael Knoblauch, Clovis West, pinned Bryce Martin, Bakersfield, 1:23

126 consolation: Kyler Hansen, Buchanan, maj dec. Reiley Johnstone, Mission Oak, 10-1; William Saavedra, Foothill, pinned Nick Deorian, Central, 1:34

UPDATED, 10:57 a.m.: Brandon Rodriguez of Clovis West has defeated Oscar Marin. The score was 3-2 late; I didn't see if that was the final. In the other semi at 120, Daniel Gaytan is up 13-2 on Central's Ontiveros. They're holding the 126-pound semis until this weight is finished. In the meantime, a consolation update: Bakersfield's Arik Onsurez is down 4-0 to Lemoore's Sean Williams at 113, with a seventh-place match staring him straight in the face.
Daniel Gaytan finishes off a 14-2 major decision and will face Clovis West's Brandon Rodriguez in a rematch of last weekend's TRAC final.
At 126, Bryce Martin of Bakersfield is in early trouble against Clovis West's Michael Knoblauch. He's been pinned at 1:23. Big performance from Knoblauch. The other semi is between Clovis' Vicente Hernandez against Frontier's Izaiah Ozuna. Scoreless after a conservative first period. Now Hernandez down in the second, and he works a quick reversal for a 2-0 lead.
Semifinal results are listed below. Also pay attention to the consolation winners: Those are Masters qualifiers; losers have to wrestle in the so-called blood round for seventh place.

106 semifinals: MIguel Martinez, Madera, pinned Julian Gaytan, Clovis, 2:34; Adrian Camposano, Central, dec. Matt Gamble, Monache, 6-4

106 consolation: Marco Velasquez, Foothill, dec. Jaiver Jimenez, Porterville, 7-5; Joey Cisneros, Redwood, dec. Carlos Herrera, Bakersfield, 9-2

113 semifinals: Mason Pengilly, Porterville, dec. Seth Hood, Monache, 5-0; Jonas Gaytan, Clovis, dec. Jason Delacruz, Buchanan, 3-0

113 consolation: Chris Tamez, Clovis East, dec. Daniel Ruiz, Madera, 2-0; Sean Williams, Lemoore, dec. Arik Onsurez, Bakersfield, 6-0

120 semifinals: Daniel Gaytan, Clovis, maj. dec. Matt Ontiveros, Central, 14-2; Brandon Rodriguez, Clovis West, dec. Oscar Marin, Bakersfield, 5-2

UPDATED, 10:44 a.m.: Actually, Bakersfield took another blow in that third-round consolation, too: Jake East lost 5-2 to Clovis North's Jordan Pyzer, so three Drillers have been eliminated. None of those three upperweights were expected to go through, but a surprise would have been a big boon. Didn't happen. The Drillers also have a couple of lightweights at risk in the seventh-place match.
Back to semifinals: Monache's Seth Hood against top seed Mason Pengilly of Porterville at 113. Pengilly leads 2-0 there. Gaytan has had his hand raised for a victory against Delacruz, but I didn't see the score. Pengilly escape and another takedown for a 5-0 lead late in the second. Looks like a Gaytan vs. Pengilly final.
At 120, Bakersfield's first semfiinalist takes the mat. It'll be Oscar Marin against No. 2 seed Brandon Rodriguez of Clovis West. They're in a tight match, but Rodriguez just gota second-period takedown to lead 3-1. In the other semi, it's Clovis' Daniel Gaytan, the top seed, against Central's Matt Ontiveros.

195 consolation winners: Luiz Placido, Madera South; Raul Rocha, Fresno; Cameron Willis, Liberty; Jordan Pyzer, Clovis North

220 consolation winners: Andrew Sanchez, Golden West; Jordan Olgin, Foothill; Joseph Santos-Valles, Hoover; Matt Weiss, Clovis

HWT consolation winners: Brophy Haitt, Golden West; Johnathan Roa, Lemoore; Carson Crawford, Centennial; Mustaff Mahmood, Clovis West

UPDATED, 10:29 a.m.: A few consolation fourth-rounders are still running, but we're ready for the semifinals. Consolation quarterfinals — which are crucial matches in their own right — will be wrestled on the back mats. Winners there are safely into the top six; losers must wrestle for seventh and risk their seasons once again.
At 106, it's Madera's Miguel Martinez against Clovis' Julian Gaytan and Central's Adrian Camposano against Monache's Matt Gamble in the semifinals.
Martinez has just pinned Gaytan in the second period, so the top seed is through to the final. Camposano clings to a 4-2 lead late in the second. Takedown Gamble in the final 10 seconds, and we're tied 4-4 heading to the third. Camposano on bottom. Reversal for Camposano with about a minute to go, and he takes a 6-4 lead. Now into the final 30 seconds. Out of bounds at 22 secs. Late chance for Gamble to reverse back, scramble situation. Camposano will hold on and face Miguel Martinez in the first final tonight.
At 113, it's another Gaytan, Jonas the No. 2 seed, against the No. 6 seed, Jason Delacruz of Buchanan. Can't see the score on that mat, but it looks like Gaytan is in control
Back in the consolations, Redwood's Joey Cisneros is up big on Bakersfield's Carlos Herrera, so the Driller will have to win a seventh-place match to qualify for Masters at 106. More bad news for Bakersfield: Heavyweight Jorge Mata goes down to Lemoore's Johnathan Roa and is eliminated. Most BHS can qualify now is 12, while Clovis has all 14 in good shape.

170 consolation winners: Gregory Robinson, Edison; Ryan Holmes, Stockdale; Josh Bailey, Frontier; Angel Robles, Lemoore

182 consolation winners: Ritchie Brandt, Bullard; Gerardo Gutierrez, Madera; Jacob Pedraza, Hanford West; Brooks Ribiero, Mission Oak

UPDATED, 10:18 a.m.: I believe they've called all of the consolation matches now, so we should be into the semifinals in the next 10-15 minutes.
Meanwhile, Independence's lone remaining wrestler, Jason Linderman, is down 6-1 to Hanford West's Jacob Pedraza in the third period, so it appears the Falcons will be done for the season. Yet another West wrestler is through, though: 152-pounder Miguel Trejo. The Vikings are having a really good weekend.

152 consolation winners: Miguel Trejo, West; Miguel Ruiz, Madera; Jason Medley, Mission Oak; Jorge Elisarrarez, Sanger

160 consolation winners: Jason Zechini, Mt. Whitney; Jaime Martinez, Lemoore; Charles Yilan, Madera South; David Jepsen, Central

UPDATED, 10:09 a.m.: West's James Toro, one of a couple of Vikings to pull off an upset yesterday, is battling Buchanan's Jonathan Lopez at 145 pounds. Toro is in control with three second-period nearfall points for a 7-2 lead. Toro finishes that off; didn't see the score, but he's signing a bout sheet. Might have been a pin. He'll take on Clovis' Dominic Kincaid next.
Frontier's Josh Bailey is finishing off a 4-1 victory over McLane's Anthony Lora at 170, but Centennial's Aaron Schoenborn, the No. 7 seed at that weight, just went down to Edison's Gregory Robinson.

132 consolation winners: Matthew Holmes, Lemoore; Christian Rodriguez, Reedley; Tyler Zimmer, Clovis West; Conner Francis, Buchanan

138 consolation winners: Dillen Rocha, Lemoore; Chris Garcia, Clovis West; Rosario Sanchez, Sanger; Daniel Lopez, Kennedy

145 consolation winners: Jorge Perez, Edison; Chase Fiddler, Centennial; Dominic Kincaid, Clovis; James Toro, West

UPDATED, 9:50 a.m.: Things will slow down for the top two teams now — Clovis and Bakersfield have a combined one wrestler in the consolations until we reach 195 pounds, and that's Clovis' Dominic Kincaid at 145.
But there is plenty of other action to go around with wrestlers fighting for their seasons. That includes Stockdale 132-pounder D.J. Cotter, who's battling Buchanan's Conner Francis. They're in a scramble early, and Francis has the takedown. Cotter is the No. 8 seed here, so he's technically favored, but it appears to be an even match.
Kincaid is on mat now for Clovis as well. He's got an early takedown of Granite Hills' Martin Ayala. He's got nearfall now and is in complete control, 7-0 after a period.
Cotter has taken a 4-3 lead on Francis with about a minute left there. East's lone remaining wrestler, Adrian Onsurez, has a tough challenge at 120 with Porterville's No. 4 seed, Abel Contreras.
Now Francis has an escape to tie the match late. Francis relaxed as the clock expired and Cotter dove on him, but it was too late. We'll have overtime. Cotter in on a single-leg, but Francis able to sprawl out. Now control for Francis into a cradle. He'll win the match, 6-4, and move on.
Didn't see the score, but Porterville's Contreras just had his hand raised, eliminating East's last wrestler. Stockdale is down to two; Carlito Pizano also lost at 120. Foothill's William Saavedra wins by tech fall, so he's moving on.

113 consolation winners: Chris Tamez, Clovis East; Daniel Ruiz, Madera; Sean Williams, Lemoore; Arik Onsurez, Bakersfield.

120 consolation winners: Delano Headrix, Mission Oak; Jose Navarro, Madera; Abel Contreras, Porterville; Alejandro Jimenez, Buchanan

126 consolation winners: Kyler Hansen, Buchanan; Reiley Johnstone, Mission Oak; William Saavedra, Foothill; Nick Deorian, Central

UPDATED, 9:33 a.m.: A couple of locals with their seasons at stake at 106 pounds, and Foothill's Marco Velasquez, the No. 7 seed, is in control of El Diamante's Jacob Delgado.
But at 113, Foothill's Nick Marquez is caught in a cradle from Madera's Daniel Ruiz. He's pinned. Down goes the No. 3 seed and returning state qualifier. Trojans coach Brad Hull puts his hands on his head and turns away. That's what this time of year can do to you. It's win or go home.
Same for Bakersfield's Carlos Herrera, who is in a 106 battle with Reedley's A.J. Rosas. It's 3-2 Rosas in the second period, and now the Pirate is out for an escape and a 4-2 lead. Herrera, the No. 8 seed, would be a key qualifier for Bakersfield if he can get through. The Drillers need all the numbers they can get if they're going to have a prayer against Clovis in a couple of weeks. Takedown Herrera with 12 seconds left in the second ties us at 4. We'll see if he can ride out the rest of the period. Reedley coaches are arguing that Herrera didn't have the takedown before the wrestlers went out of bounds, but it's going to stand.
Another BHS No. 8 seed, Arik Onsurez at 113 pounds, is about to get going against Edison's Alex Orosco. Back at 106, Herrera rides out the final 12 seconds and goes to the third, 4-4. He'll be down in the third. Takedown Onsurez at 113. An escape for Herrera at 106, and he leads 5-4. Now he nearly has a takedown to cement the lead, but they're out of bounds.  45 seconds left. A couple of escapes for Orosco of Edison tie up the 113 match, 2-2 in the second. Meanwhile, Herrera holds on near the edge of the circle as time ticks away. He wins it 5-4.
Back at 113, takedown for Onsurez and a 4-2 lead. Now he tries the tilt but Orosco rolls through it. End of the second period, score still 4-2. Onsurez bottom to start the third and not doing a whole lot down there. A few stalling calls from the crowd. Now Orosco has something locked up. Stalling called on Onsurez, and that's the second of the match. 4-3. It would be wise of Onsurez to work up here. Restart with 33 seconds left. Onsurez tries a granby. 15 seconds. He's got to keep moving. Tries to come up, and that might be enough. Time expires, and another big one-point win for the Drillers.
The referee from the 106-pound match just came by. Reedley is protesting the result of Herrera's victory.

106 pound consolation winners: Marco Velasquez, Foothill; Javier Jimenez, Porterville; Joey Cisneros, Redwood; Carlos Herrera, Bakersfield

ORIGINAL POST: You know it's a big day here in Lemoore when they've got Journey blasting on the loudspeaker. It fits, though: "Don't Stop Believin'" is a good theme for the day, especially for those wrestlers who are in action first.

Starting at 9 a.m., they'll be staging fourth-round consolation matches. Win, and you're in the consolation quarterfinals and guaranteed an eighth-place finish — that's critical, because the top seven qualify for Masters next weekend. One more win for the consolation quarterfinalists, whether it be in that round or in the seventh-place match, gets them in. Lose in this first round, though, and you become a spectator.

An hour after that, scheduled for 10 a.m., is the semifinals. Those are important for obvious reasons. We're about to get going.
