UPDATED, 8:41 p.m.: Sorry, newspaper story calls again. But the quarterfinals have finished. Here's what happened.
Silas Nacita, the state No. 1 for Bakersfield, took care of Lemoore's Angel Robles, 16-3, at 170, and the No. 2 seed, Clovis' Zach Nevills, pinned Centennial's Aaron Schoenborn early in the second period. They'll be joined by Bullard's Caz Ashijian and Madera south's Juan Valladares in the semifinals.
Kyle Pope also won for Bakersfield in a crazy quarterfinal, and three late takedowns give him a 13-10 victory and gives the Drillers nine victories in a row after their two lightweights were pinned by top seeds. Two of the three upperweights who lost in the second round, by the way, are still alive in consolation, with Chase Sunquist the only exception. Not a bad day at all for BHS. Just not quite as good as terrific Clovis, which as been the story for the past two years.
Frontier also had a great day, with four of its five quarterfinalists through to the semis. That includes heavyweight John Popek, who beat Centennial's Carson Crawford for the third time in 10 days, this time 3-1.
I'll update one more time with team scores after Day 1 and semifinal matchups.

UPDATED, 7:42 p.m.: Breaking news: It took almost 10 hours, but a Clovis wrestler has finally lost. It took a big effort from Liberty's Tyler Hartsfield, No. 4 at 145 pounds, but he knocked off fifth-seeded Dominic Kincaid 7-5. That sets up a rematch of last week's SWYL final with top-seeded Maxx Ramirez — a match that Hartfield actually won, 9-7. Should be a good semifinal tomorrow.
Now a big one at 160 between A.J. Fierro of Bakersfield, the No. 6 seed, and No. 3 Jaime Martinez of Lemoore. The Drillers are looking for another big upset. Scoreless first period, and Martinez and Fierro get matching escapes to make it 1-1 in the third. Now Martinez now has the match's first takedown. Fierro out again, and I believe — again, I can't see the scoreboard — that it's 3-2 Lemoore. Now a late stalling call? Yep, that's what it is, and it'll tie the match. Lemoore coaches not pleased, but we have overtime. Wrestlers really going hard here. Fierro with a nice shot, and he's got it! 5-3 the final, I believe, and another big 6-over-3 upset for the Drillers.
Another big upset at 160 is Hoover's Shawn Suikowsky continuing his incredible run with a 7-3 decision of No. 4 seed Austin Flores of Clovis North. Suikowsky is the only unseeded wrestler thus far to reach the semifinals.
145 quarterfinals: (1) Maxx Ramirez, Bakersfield, maj. dec. James Toro, West, 17-5
(4) Tyler Hartsfield, Liberty, dec. (5) Dominic Kincaid, Clovis, 7-5
(3) Osamuyimen Osunde, Lemoore, pinned (6) Greg Pagela, Porterville, 4:40
(2) Oscar Corona, Foothill, dec. (7) Danny Alvarado, Mission Oak, 3-2
152 quarterfinals: (1) Isiah Martinez, Lemoore, pinned Carlos Torres, Hoover, 1:38
(4) Colby Thompson, Clovis, dec. (5) Jason Medley, Mission Oak, 6-1
(3) Kyle Perreault, Clovis East, dec. (6) Miguel Ruiz, Madera, 7-4
(2) Coleman Hammond, Bakersfield, tech fall Miguel Trejo, West, 23-7
160 quarterfinals: (1) Adrian Salas, Clovis, pinned (8) Andrew Worth, Stockdale, 3:31
Sebastian Suikowsky, Hoover, dec. (4) Austin Flores, Clovis North, 7-3
(6) A.J. Fierro, Bakersfield, dec. (3) Jaime Martinez, Lemoore, 5-3 OT
(7) Kyle Shepherd, Frontier, dec. Kalvin Stuckey, Bullard, 10-3
UPDATED, 7:25 p.m.: Sorry for the delay — working on a couple of things for the newspaper story tomorrow morning. The 120-pound quarterfinal results are listed below the previous update, and subsequent weights are directly below. I'll post semifinal matchups at the end of the night.
Natrelle Demison breezed through his quarterfinal at 138 for Bakersfield, and now Maxx Ramirez is on mat at 145. He had to take an injury timeout in the second period but is back wrestling and appears to be in control against West's James Toro.
In an all-local quarterfinal at 126, Frontier's Izaiah Ozuna pinned William Saavedra of Foothill midway through the second period. Hasn't been a good round thus far for the Trojans, but they've got some strength in the upperweights, too. 126 is the first weight, by the way, where the top four seeds all made it through to the semifinals. So much for all that chalk we had earlier. It was also the top four seeds easily through at 132, where the closest quarterfinal match was Matt Gay's 12-0 win for Clovis.
But the upsets started again at 138. The No. 2 seed, Lemoore's Dillen Rocha, goes down 5-2 to Madera South's Jose Hernandez. Big surprise there, and it makes things easier on the other top seeds, Bakersfield's Natrelle Demison, Buchanan's Racelis Cardenas and Clovis' Jason Ladd.
The Cougars, by the way, are 6-for-6 in their quarterfinal matches. This is an all-time good team, folks.
126 quarterfinals: (1) Vicente Hernandez, Clovis, tech fall Nick Deorian, Central, 15-0
(4) Izaiah Ozuna, Frontier, pinned (5) William Saavedra, Foothill, 2:51
(3) Bryce Martin, Bakersfield, pinned (6) Reiley Johnstone, Mission Oak, 2:22
(2) Michael Knoblauch, Clovis West, dec. (7) Kyler Hansen, Buchanan, 7-3
132 quarterfinals: (1) Patrick Phaysamone, Clovis East, tech fall (8) D.J. Cotter, Stockdale, 16-0
(4) Martin Sandoval, Porterville, pinned (5) Tyler Zimmer, Clovis West, 5:06
(3) Matt Gay, Clovis, maj. dec. (6) Christian Rodriguez, Reedley, 12-0
(2) Micah Cruz, Bakersfield, tech fall Matthew Holmes, Lemoore, 15-0
138 quarterfinals: (1) Natrelle Demison, Bakersfield, pinned Rosario Sanchez, Sanger, 2:42
(4) Jason Ladd, Clovis, pinned (5) Chris Garcia, Clovis West, 5:52
(3) Racelis Cardenas, Buchanan, dec. (6) Daniel Lopez, Kennedy, 10-3
(7) Jose Hernandez, Madera South, dec. (2) Dillen Rocha, Lemoore, 5-2
UPDATED, 7:00 p.m.: An assortment of 120 and 126 quarterfinals out there, including the fourth straight Bakersfield High match on Mat 2. It's No. 3 seed Bryce Martin wrestling Mission Oak's No. 6, Reiley Johnstone. Johnstone has the first takedown after a nifty shot, and he leads 2-1 after a period. Martin escapes to tie the match early in the second, and now a lightning single-leg gives him the lead. Martin, like many of the Drillers, is spectacular on top, and he quickly works a tilt for some nearfall points. Now he has Johnstone turned. The BHS crowd behind me roars, and there's the pin. Two semifinalists and counting for Bakersfield.
Clovis, though is already at four. Every time I look up, the Cougars are breezing by someone. Daniel Gaytan, a defending state champion, pinned his man at 120, and Vicente Hernandez was in control at 126, though I didn't see how the match ended. Safe to say the Cougars are going to be prominently featured in tomorrow's semifinals (and really, for the rest of the run to March 3 at Rabobank Arena).
On to 132, where Micah Cruz, the No. 2 seed for Bakersfield, gives up the first takedown to Lemoore's unseeded Matthew Holmes. Cruz appears to have recovered, though, with an escape and takedown of his own. And now a quick pin. So much for a challenge there.
UPDATED, 6:49 p.m.: Tough assignments again for Bakersfield and Foothill at 113. The Drillers' Arik Onsurez goes down via pin against top seed Mason Pengilly of Porterville, and Foothill's Nick Marquez, the No. 3 seed, is in a battle with No. 6 Jason Delacruz of Buchanan. A tough one for No. 2 seed Jonas Gaytan of Clovis, but he gets a late takedown to finish off Clovis East's Chris Tamez, 6-4. Close match for Marin. I believe he's down a point and on bottom. Fighting to get out. Navarro is locking hands, so that could tie the match. Now Marin flips on top and now has a pin! What a turnaround, and a big win for the No. 6 seed. Drillers needed that, and Marin is safely through to the semis — and to Masters, no matter what happens tomorrow.
Marquez, meanwhile, is upset by Delacruz, 6-1. Never really threatened the Buchanan wrestler in that one. A bit surprsiing.
They've also started a couple of 120-pound quarters: Bakersfield's Oscar Marin, another Drillers underdog, battles Madera's Jose Navarro.
Here are team scores through second-round consolation: Clovis 108, Bakersfield 92.5, Lemoore 74, Buchanan and Madera 70.5, Clovis West 66.5, Frontier 61, Porterville 58, Foothill 55.5, Madera South 54.5.
113 quarterfinals: (1) Mason Pengilly, Porterville, pinned (8) Arik Onsurez, Bakersfield, 1:11
(5) Seth Hood, Monache, dec. (4) Sean Williams, Lemoore, 5-4
(6) Jason Delacruz, Buchanan, dec. (3) Nick Marquez, Foothill, 6-1
(2) Jonas Gaytan, Clovis, dec. (7) Chris Tamez, Clovis East, 6-4
120 quarterfinals: (1) Daniel Gaytan, Clovis, pinned (8) Darrion Harris, Redwood, 2:50
(5) Matt Ontiveros, Central, dec. (4) Abel Contreras, Porterville, 5-3
(6) Oscar Marin, Bakersfield, pinned (3) Jose Navarro, Madera, 5:05
(2) Brandon Rodriguez, Clovis West, maj. dec. Ryan Poe, Monache, 8-0
UPDATED, 6:31 p.m.: They will run the final two rounds of the night concurrently; that's the quarterfinals on the front four mats and the third-round consolation on the back four mats. The winners of the consos face the losers of the quarters first thing in the morning; the winners of the quarters, obviously, go to the semifinals, and the losers of the consos can call it a season. Also — the quarterfinal winners are guaranteed a sixth-place finish even if they go 0-3 tomorrow, which means a win here gets them safely through to Masters.
So here we go. Marco Velasquez of Foothill is battling Central's Adrian Camposano at 106 pounds. Can't see the score, but Velasquez just reversed Camposano and now the Grizzlie is hurt. On a far mat, it's Clovis' Julian Gaytan finishing off Redwood's Joey Cisneros. That's a mild upset, a No. 5 over No. 4, but you start to expect these things from Clovis. The Cougars have the first of many semifinalists.
Now Velasquez and Camposano back at it. Escape for Camposano. Meanwhile, top-seeded Miguel Martinez of Madera is battling Bakersfield's Carlos Herrera. Takedown for Camposano, who seems to have taken control of that match. Again, I can't see any of the scoreboards except for the mat right in front of me, but I'll let you know what I can see. Takedown for Madera's Martinez. Now Camposano starting to turn Velasquez. Here's nearfall. Time running low and no pin, but a big lead now for Camposano. Herrera escapes for BHS but Martinez has just taken him down again, to his back, for two nearfall to boot. He's in complete control. Herrera on his back again, and there's the pin late in the second period.
I'll update quarterfinal results as I get them.
106 pound quarterfinals: (1) Miguel Martinez, Madera, pinned Carlos Herrera, Bakersfield, 3:48
(5) Julian Gaytan, Clovis, dec. (4) Joey Cisneros, Redwood, 7-5
(3) Matt Gamble, Monache, dec. (6) Javier Jimenez, Porterville, 5-4
(2) Adrian Camposano, Central, dec. (7) Marco Velasquez, Foothill, 9-4
UPDATED, 5:58 p.m.: I guess four quarterfinalists seemed low for Frontier because it was. The Titans have five: Izaiah Ozuna (126), Kyle Shepherd (160), Josh Bailey (170), Jack Murphy (195) and John Popek (HWT). List has been updated below.
195s and 220s wrestling in the consolation right now. They just called for heavyweights to report to staging. We're about 15 minutes from the quarters, I'd guess.
UPDATED, 5:39 p.m.: As we go through this consolation round and amp up for the quarterfinals (I'd give it another 30-45 minutes or so before they begin), here's a look at which schools have the most in the quarterfinals. Use this as a substitute for team scores, which aren't available just yet.
Clovis 14
Bakersfield 11
Lemoore 10
Foothill 7
Clovis West 6
Madera, Porterville, Frontier 5
Buchanan 4
Monache, Central, Clovis East, Mission Oak, Stockdale, Hoover, Bullard 3
Redwood, Sanger, Madera South, West, Clovis North, Centennial, North 2
Reedley, Kennedy, Liberty, Hanford West, Tulare Union, Edison, Golden Valley, Golden West 1
Surprises? Quarterfinals don't tell the whole story (plenty of guys in the consolations can still make serious noise), but how about that West High has as many quarterfinalists as Clovis North, Madera South and Centennial? Or that Hoover and Stockdale have more than those two and as many as Clovis East? Buchanan and Frontier seem low at four each, but that's how tough this tournament can be. They call it the meat-grinder for a reason, and the grinding is just getting started.
UPDATED, 5:00 p.m.: After a slew of upsets in the upperweights, we almost go back to chalk in the heavyweight second round. The guy who shook things up was Golden Valley's Jose Hernandez, who beat No. 8 seed Mustaff Mahmood of Clovis West in relatively easy fashion, 11-4. Hernandez gets defending state champion Nick Nevills of Clovis tonight, but even if he loses, he's only a couple of matches away from state tomorrow morning. That would be a coup for the Bulldogs.
We're now into the second round of all consolation. I'll take a small break and come back when we get closer to the quarterfinals. There will be one more round of consolation tonight as well, with the winners there facing the quarterfinal losers first thing tomorrow morning.
Heavyweight quarterfinals: (1) Nick Nevills, Clovis, vs. Jose Hernandez, Golden Valley
(4) John Popek, Frontier, vs. (5) Carson Crawford, Centennial
(3) Narciso Juarez, Sanger, vs. (6) Johnathan Roa, Lemoore
(2) Rudy Amaya, Foothill, vs. (7) Brophy Haitt, Golden West
UPDATED, 4:55 p.m.: Oy. I just lost an entire update that included a dramatic win from North's A.J. Heath at 220 pounds and much more. I'll try my best to re-create. In a 2-2 match, Heath was called for head-butting Porterville's Giovanni Gonzales and penalized a point. He recovered in time to get a takedown with less than five seconds left and win, 4-3.
Elsewhere, the No. 5 seed at 195, Madera South's Luiz Placido, went down 6-3 to Buchanan's Eric An. The No. 6 seed, Highland's Joe Juarez, lost a 5-4 decision to Fresno's Raul Rocha. At 220, South's No. 5 seed, Jay Webber, fell into the consolations after a 3-2 loss to Hoover's Joseph Santos-Valles. Great round for the northern version of the Patriots, who have had three unseeded wrestlers knock off seeds. Also, the No. 4 seed at 220, Andrew Sanchez of Golden West, is stunned by Edison's Otillo Carillio, who pinned him at 1:42. Santos-Valles and Carillio face off in the only quarterfinal between unseeded guys.
Meanwhile, as expected, Clovis has surged ahead of Bakersfield here in the heavier weights. All 14 Cougars are in the quarterfinals, while BHS suffered pins at 195, 220 and heavyweight, the latter two to top seeds. If those guys can do damage in the consolations, it would do wonders for Bakersfield's chances at state in a couple of weeks.
195 quarterfinals: (1) Dakota Gordon, Clovis, vs. (8) Jordan Pyzer, Clovis North
(4) Lenny Pedraza, Madera, vs. Eric An, Buchanan
(3) Nate Lopez, Lemoore, vs. Raul Rocha, Fresno
(2) Jack Murphy, Frontier, vs. (7) Demari Harris, Tulare Union
220 quarterfinals: (1) Arnold Salinas, Fresno, vs. (8) Matt Weiss, Clovis
Otillo Carillio, Edison, vs. Joseph Santos-Valles, Hoover
(3) Jordan Olgin, Foothill, vs. (6) Cortes Morales, Clovis West
(2) Eric Mendoza, Madera, vs. (7) A.J. Heath, North
UPDATED, 4:26 p.m.: I can't see the scoreboard on that mat from where I'm sitting, but I believe Jake East of Bakersfield is sticking with Lemoore's No. 3 seed, Nate Lopez, at 195 pounds. I think it's 1-0 headed to the third period, though now Lopez is getting nearfall. 4-0. East reverses him to make it 4-2 with a minute left. Now he's getting desperate and tries a crazy roll, and Lopez lands on top of him. Pin. East, who probably weighs about 175 pounds but had to move all the way up, put up a good fight there before succumbing. He'll have a chance to move through in the consolations.
Big win for Foothill at 182. Diego Lopez knocked off No. 6 seed Brooks Ribiero of Mission Oak to reach the quarters, where he'll face Clovis' Ryan Davies, who pinned Centennial's Victor Guevara.
After this round, we'll have a round of consolation only before getting to the quarters.
170 quarterfinals: (1) Silas Nacita, Bakersfield, vs. (8) Angel Robles, Lemoore
(4) Juan Valladares, Madera South, vs.
(3) Caz Ashijian, Bullard, vs. (6) Ryan Holmes, Stockdale
(2) Zach Nevills, Clovis, vs. (7) Aaron Schoenborn, Centennial
182 quarterfinals: (1) Nikko Reyes, Clovis West, vs. (8) Cody McWilliams, North
(4) DeAndre Daise, Lemoore, vs. (5) Jacob Pedraza, Hanford West
(3) Ryan Davies, Clovis, vs. Diego Lopez, Foothill
(2) Kyle Pope, Bakersfield, vs. (7) Ritchie Brandt, Bullard
UPDATED, 4:17 p.m.: Our biggest upset of the afternoon so far comes at 160 pounds, where Hoover's Sebastian Suikowsky took out No. 5 seed Jason Zechini of Mt. Whitney, 2-0, with a couple of second-period nearfall points. That will shake up that bracket considerably — and send a dangerous Zechini to the consolation side, where he lurks for anyone else with thoughts of getting through to Masters.
And now that's not the biggest upset of the day. Bullard's Kalvin Stuckey has that honor now after a 6-4 stunner over No. 2 seed Charles Yilan of Madera South. Wow. Now two big lurkers in the consolation bracket at 160. That makes things difficult for the quarterfinal losers, who will need to win a couple of matches tomorrow to get through.
Smooth sailing continues for Clovis and Bakersfield. The Cougars get Adrian Salas through at 160 and Zach Nevills at 170;, the Drillers A.J. Fierro at 160 and Silas Nacita via tech fall at 170. The closest match either team has had in this second round? A 6-1 victory by Colby Thompson of Clovis at 152. Bryce Martin had an 8-2 decision at 126 for the Drillers. Take that back. Fierro's victory was 3-1. So that's the "closest" either team has been to losing in this round. Pretty dominant. The first time either will be underdogs comes at 195 pounds, when BHS' Jake East faces No. 3 seed Nate Lopez of Lemoore.
160 quarterfinals: (1) Adrian Salas, Clovis, vs. (8) Andrew Worth, Stockdale
(4) Austin Flores, Clovis North, vs. Sebastian Suikowski, Hoover
(3) Jaime Martinez, Lemoore, vs. (6) A.J. Fierro, Bakersfield
(7) Kyle Shepherd, Frontier vs. Kalvin Stuckey, Bullard
UPDATED, 3:57 p.m.: An addendum to my big-picture thought from the last update: The true big picture from this weekend is how many wrestlers Clovis and Bakersfield get through to next week and eventually to state. That's where the real battle will be waged; Clovis' depth is too much for anyone to consider knocking the Cougars off this weekend, including BHS. So right now, the Drillers need to be happy that everyone who should advance is on track to do so. That's the point right now.
Of course, some BHS guys have other plans. One of them is 152-pounder Coleman Hammond, who has lost to just one man this year: Lemoore's Isaiah Martinez, who happens to be the top seed here. Hammond would love nothing more than to even the score there. He's off to a good start; after a bye in his first match, Hammond pinned Central's Tylor Wing in 59 seconds to reach the quarterfinals.
We also had a couple of upsets at 152, our first weight where two seeded wrestlers fail to reach the quarters. No. 8 John Mello of North fell 9-7 to Hoover's Carlos Torres, and West's Miguel Trejo pulled a 13-8 upset of No. 7 seed Esan Padraza of Hanford West. Big win for the Vikings, who lost their top wrestler to a weigh-in fail at the SYL championships last week; of course, Trejo has Hammond next.
152 quarterfinals: (1) isaiah Martinez, Lemoore, vs. Carlos Torres, Hoover
(4) Colby Thompson, Clovis, vs. (5) Jason Medley, Mission Oak
(3) Kyle Perreault, Clovis East, vs. (6) Miguel Ruiz, Madera
(2) Coleman Hammond, Bakersfield, vs. Miguel Trejo, West
UPDATED, 3:44 p.m.: A seed goes down early for the fourth straight weight at 145 in an all-local upset. West's James Toro, the South Yosemite League champion, beats No. 8 seed Chase Fiddeler of Centennial, who took third in the SWYL, by a 7-5 score. Toro's reward is a quarterfinal against SWYL runner-up Maxx Ramirez of Bakersfield, the top seed. But quarterfinal losers need to win just two matches — and they can even lose one in between — in the consolation bracket to get into the top seven and into Masters. That's a big advantage for everyone who wins in this round.
A big-picture thought: Through the first seven weights — exactly half — both Clovis and Bakersfield have all seven wrestlers through to the quarterfinals. But you'll notice via seeds that things might separate from here. Five of those seven Clovis wrestlers will be favored in the quarters while only four Drillers are, including two who will be big underdogs against a top seed. We'll also have our first Bakersfield vs. Clovis head-to-head meeting at heavyweight in this round: defending state champion Nick Nevills of Clovis against Bakersfield's unseeded Jorge Mata. The Cougars are poised to stretch out that lead in the second half of this round.
145 quarterfinals: (1) Maxx Ramirez, Bakersfield, vs. James Toro, West
(4) Tyler Hartsfield, Liberty, vs. (5) Dominic Kincaid, Clovis
(3) Osamuyimen Osunde, Lemoore, vs. (6) Greg Pagela, Porterville
(2) Oscar Corona, Foothill, vs. (7) Danny Alverado, Mission Oak
UPDATED, 3:29 p.m.: I've looked through the rest of the brackets. There was one more seed to go down in the first round: Joe Duran of Porterville, who was No. 8 at 138 pounds. He lost 3-2 to Sanger's Rosario Sanchez. So that's it. Out of 112 seeds (granted, quite a few had byes), 110 make it to the second round. And all 37 who have wrestled in the second round have won. That's pretty good work by the seeding committee, I'd say.
But now, just as I'm typing, an upset. North's Allan Guardado, the No. 7 seed at 132, was leading Lemoore's Matthew Holmes 8-0 when Holmes just pinned him 31 seconds into the third period. That's a big blow for a guy who was winning and who now needs to rebound in the consolations to give himself a chance. Guardado's No. 7 is the highest seed to fall so far. Also at 132, a match between No. 8 D.J. Cotter of Stockdale and Brett Parker of Bullard went to double overtime. Cotter got nearfall points from top position and an escape from bottom to win 8-5 and survive to face the top seed.
Here are some more matchups for tonight:
132 quarterfinals: (1) Patrick Phaysamone, Clovis East, vs. (8) D.J. Cotter, Stockdale
(4) Martin Sandoval, Porterville, vs. (5) Tyler Zimmer, Clovis West
(3) Matt Gay, Clovis, vs. (6) Christian Rodriguez, Reedley
(2) Micah Cruz, Bakersfield, vs. Matthew Holmes, Lemoore
138 quarterfinals: (1) Natrelle Demison, Bakersfield, vs. Rosario Sanchez, Sanger
(4) Jason Ladd, Clovis, vs. (5) Chris Garcia, Clovis West
(3) Racelis Cardenas, Buchanan, vs. (6) Daniel Lopez, Kennedy
(2) Dillen Rocha, Lemoore, vs. (7) Jose Hernandez, Madera South
UPDATED, 3:05 p.m.: Brackets are here. I don't have an electronic copy or I'd post it, but what I can do is give you the quarterfinal matchups at each weight as we get to it. The first several are listed below, with seed in parentheses.
You'll also notice we did have a seed go down at 126 pounds: No. 8 Justo Padron of Sanger, who actually lost in the first round to Central's Nick Deorian. Deorian went on to beat Fresno's Matt Sloan in the second round and is in the quarters. So far, Padron is the only seeded wrestler that I've seen not still in the winners bracket.

UPDATED, 2:49 p.m.: Quarterfinalists are set at 120 pounds. Again, all eight seeds are still standing. An upset or two would spice things up, but it looks like we'll have to wait for that. The top guys came prepared.
120 pound winners: Daniel Gaytan, Clovis; Matthew Ontiveros, Central; Darrion Harris, Redwood; Jose Navarro, Madera; Ryan Poe, Monache; Abel Contreras, Porterville; Brandon Rodriguez, Clovis West; Oscar Marin, Bakersfield
UPDATED, 2:34 p.m.: Second-round results are starting to roll in. Brackets are also being copied, so I should be able to provide tonight's quarterfinal matchups at each weight as we go. At that point, only seeded wrestlers or those who beat seeded wrestlers will be left in the championship bracket.
For now, here are all eight second-round winners from the two lowest weights. All eight seeds in both brackets have advanced. That's what we call chalk, ladies and gents.
106: Julian Gaytan, Clovis; Carlos Herrera, Bakersfield; Miguel Martinez, Madera; Joey Cisneros, Redwood; Matt Gamble, Monache; Javier Jimenez, Porterville; Marco Velasquez, Foothill; Adrian Camposano, Central
113: Arik Onsurez, Bakersfield; Sean Williams, Lemoore; Nick Marquez, Foothill; Mason Pengilly, Porterville; Seth Hood, Monache; Jason Delacruz, Buchanan; Chris Tamez, Clovis East; Jonas Gaytan, Clovis
UPDATED, 2:19 p.m.: I've missed a number of results in the past few minutes — I can't exactly demand that I get the bout sheets before anyone else, much as I might dream — but we are well into the second round championship/first round consolation. Quarterfinals, by the way, were supposed to be at 4 p.m. That's not going to happen: I'd bank on more like 6, at least as a starting point. After this round, we still need to get through consolation round 2 before we can get to the quarters. They'll be worth the wait, though.
Meanwhile, we do have team scores after the first round: 1. Clovis 60; 2. Bakersfield 51; 3. Lemoore 41; 4. Madera 37.5; 5. Foothill 34.5; 6. Clovis West 33.5; 7. Porterville 31; t8. Buchanan, Frontier, Centennial
UPDATED, 2:00 p.m.: The first round has just about finished, save for a couple of heavyweight matches still going, so we're diving right into round 2 of championship (that's the round of 16) and the first round of consolation, where losers will see their seasons end.
I'll report championship results only here to keep things less confusing, unless I see a consolation result of note.
Here are the rest of the first-round winners (might be a few more coming):
220 winners: Mitch Sipe, Frontier
Heavyweight winners: Nick Nevills, Clovis (bye); Jose Hernandez, Golden Valley; John Popek, Frontier (forfeit); Narciso Juarez, Sanger (bye); Kyle Mask, Madera; Christian Garcia, Reedley; Johnathan Roa, Lemoore; Brophy Haitt, Golden West; Rudy Amaya, Foothill (bye)
UPDATED, 1:49 p.m.: Obviously it's tough to be certain without having completed brackets or all of the results in front of me (I grab as many as I can when they come in, but some slip by), I can't give you any definitive views. But from where I'm sitting, some non-traditional wrestling powers seem to be faring quite well in the first round: Ridgeview, Madera South, Hanford West, etc. That could change quickly as those schools start to run into more guys with seeds written by their names, but for now it's a good start.
A nice 4-1 win for Bakersfield's Jake East at 195 pounds; he's one of the guys the Drillers would love to see do some damage here, because he's not expected to get to next week. If he does, it's a huge bonus.
182 winners: Victor Guevara, Centennial; Diego Lopez, Foothill
195 winners: Jake East, Bakersfield; Demari Harris, Tulare Union; Luiz Placido, Madera South; Lenny Pedraza, Madera; Joe Juarez, Highland; Raul Rocha, Fresno; Cameron Willis, Liberty; Andrew Helston, Foothill
220 winners: Arnold Salinas, Fresno (bye); Chase Sunquist, Bakersfield; Noe Delgado, Ridgeview; Matt Weiss, Clovis; Jay Webber, South; Otillo Carillo, Edison; Jordan Olgin, Foothill (bye); Dawaud Davis, Mt. Whitney; Cortes Morales, Clovis West; A.J. Heath, North; Eric Mendoza, Madera (bye); Giovanni Gonzales, Porterville; Andrew Sanchez, Golden West
UPDATED, 1:29 p.m.: New mark for the fastest pin of the day goes to Lemoore's DeAndre Daise, the No. 4 seed at 182 pounds, who needed just 16 seconds to stick Golden Valley's Eduardo Gamino. One of my few high school wrestling successes was a 29-second pin that seemed impossibly fast to me. I can't imagine doing it in half that time. But Daise pulls it off here.
170 winners: Juan Valladares, Madera South; Jose Padilla, Sanger; Dejon Taylor, Clovis East; Ryan Holmes, Stockdale
182 winners: Jason Linderman, Independence; Jacob Pedraza, Hanford West; Saul Enciso, Roosevelt; Peter An, Buchanan; Brooks Ribeiro, Mission Oak
195 winners: Dakota Gordon, Clovis (bye); Jordan Pyzer, Clovis North; Jkell Herring, Independence; Nate Lopez, Lemoore; Jack Murphy, Frontier (bye); Elijah Lantia, Hanford West; Isaiah Aceves, Mt. Whitney
UPDATED, 1:16 p.m.: One of the best matches of the day thus far comes at 160, where Highland's Ali Ahmed — who wasn't seeded but was an alternate seed in case any of the top eight didn't show — loses 4-3 to Clovis North's Austin Flores, the No. 4 seed. Ahmed couldn't get the takedown he needed in the third period to spring the upset.
160 winners: Sebastian Suikowski, Hoover; Austin Flores, Clovis North; David Jepsen, Central
170 winners: Silas Nacita, Bakersfield (bye); Mark Flores, West (forfeit); Angel Robles, Lemoore; Aaron Morrison, Ridgeview; Aaron Schoenborn, Centennial; Tony Amaya, Reedley; Josh Bailey, Frontier; Gregory Robinson, Edison
182 winners: Nikko Reyes, Clovis West (bye); Ricardo Pineda, South (forfeit); Cody McWilliams, North; Romero Castillo, Edison; Ryan Davies, Clovis (bye); Kyle Pope, Bakersfield (bye)
UPDATED, 1:05 p.m.: Into the heavier half of the first round now, with 152-pound results rolling in. It's no surprise that there haven't been many upsets thus far: The top-notch wrestlers won't start running into each other until the second round, maybe not even until this evening's quarterfinals. That's when the curd will start to separate.
The clear-cut top two teams here, Clovis and Bakersfield, both are unbeaten thus far. The juggernaut Cougars have all 14 wrestlers seeded, so that's no surprise and includes 160--pound top seed Adrian Salas, who has the day's fastest pin thus far, 20 seconds. Bakersfield is a bit weaker at the heavy weights, so we might see a first-round loss from the Drillers before we're done.
145 winners: Albert Garcia, Clovis West; Tyler Hartsfield, Liberty
152 winners: Isaiah Martinez, Lemoore (bye); Tylor Wing, Central (forfeit); John Mello, North; Jason Medley, Mission Oak; Colby Thompson, Clovis (bye); Kyle Perreault, Clovis East (bye); Brandon Palafox, Foothill; Carlos Torres, Hoover; Carlos Monetio, Frontier; Miguel Ruiz, Madera; Esan Padraza, hanford West; Miguel Trejo, West; Cris Williams, Clovis North
160 winners: Adrian Salas, Clovis; Nick Callender, Clovis East; Adrian Hernandez, Kennedy; Andrew Worth, Stockdale; Rodrigo Alvarado, Porterville; Jason Zechini, Mt. Whitney; Nathan Castro, Sanger; Jaime Martinez, Lemoore; A.J. Fierro, Bakersfield; Kyle Shepherd, Frontier; Kalvin Stuckey, Bullard; charles Yilan, Madera South
UPDATED, 12:41 p.m.: Took a short lunch break, but I'm back with more results.
138 winners: Alex Dominguez, Centennial; Daniel Lopez, Kennedy
145 winners: Maxx Ramirez, Bakersfield; Victor Bonilla, Hanford; Osamuyimen Osundei, Lemoore; Felipe Mota, South; Danny Alverado, Mission Oak; Martin Ayala, Granite Hills; Oscar Corona, Foothill
UPDATED, 12:14 p.m.: For the record, I haven't seen a result in which a seeded wrestler lost yet. I haven't caught everything, but from what I've seen, we've avoided upsets thus far.
More winners, starting at 120 pounds: Antonio Alaniz, Lemoore; Delano Headrix, Mission Oak
126: Matt Sloan, Fresno; Nick Deorian, Central; William Saavedra, Foothill; Esteban Garcia, Madera South; Elijah Jimenez, Clovis North; Michael Knoblauch, Clovis West
132: Patrick Phaysamone, Clovis East; Nico Montiel, Central; Phillip Garcia, West; Matthew Holmes, Lemoore; Alan Guardado, North; Brett Parker, Bullard
138: Natrelle Demison, Bakersfield (bye)
UPDATED, 11:54 am.: Still waiting on final re-drawn brackets, so bear with me as far as matchups and upsets and those things.
Some more raw results:
113-pound winners: Jason Delacruz, Buchanan; Sammy Pena
120 winners: Darrion Harris, Redwood; Sonny Cardoza, Highland; Brandon Rodriguez, Clovis West; Alejandro Jimenez, Buchanan; Abel Contreras, Porterville; Matt Ontiveros, Central; Ryan Poe, Monache; Jose Navarro, Madera; Ruben Gonzalez, El Diamante; Nick Georgouses, Clovis North; Franco Gomez, Ridgeview; Oscar Marin, Bakersfield
126 winners: Vicente Hernandez, Clovis (bye); Xan Wagner, Bullard; Basilio Arroyo, Granite Hills; Izaiah Ozuna, Frontier; Bryce Martin, Bakersfield; Alex Treiberg, Centennial
UPDATED, 11:38 a.m.: There won't be a whole lot of color in the early-going here, because there are a lot of matches going on at once, and I can only get a good look at about three of the eight mats. They're also still making some minor adjustments to brackets, plugging in some alternates and such. But I'll try to get as many results as I can in the meantime.
Some more 106-pound winners: Golden West's Chris Williams, Porterville's Javier Jimenez, Highland's Peter Nebre.
First-round winners at 113 include: Independence's Andrew Valenzuela, Bakersfield's Arik Onsurez, Clovis' Jonas Gaytan, Clovis East's Chris Tamez and Bullard's Michael Rodriguez.
UPDATED, 11:28 a.m.: After some further delays, we're finally under way at about 11:10 a.m. Not a big deal in the end, right? 106-pounders are on the mat. Bakersfield's Carlos Herrera is off to a fast start against Sunnyside's James Gearson. He racks up five points and then pins him in just 53 seconds. Bonus points will be important for Bakersfield down the road at state, but there's almost no way anyone can catch Clovis this weekend anyway. The Cougars are too deep. Bakersfield's only chance is to get its top wrestlers through to state and hope they all rack up big points while Clovis' top dogs disappoint. Then BHS might have a shot at the Cougars, who are ranked in the top 10 nationally.
Here are some other first-round winners at 106: East's Niko Gonzalez, Reedley's A.J. Rosas, Clovis East's Joseph Jauregui, Foothill's Marco Velasquez, Centennial's Etienne Armijo, Monache's Matt Gamble and Frontier's Jason Cisterna.
ORIGINAL POST: Welcome to the annual wrestling live-blog season. Today we start with the Yosemite Divisional from Lemoore.
For the uninitiated, the Yosemite Divisional is perhaps the toughest state qualifier in California. The large schools from the Central Section — which includes Clovis and Bakersfield, the state's top two teams — have qualifed 32 wrestlers for each weight from their respective league tournaments. We'll whittle those 32 down to seven this weekend. Those seven join four from the Sierra/Sequoia Divisional at Washington Union at next week's Central Section Masters.
Once at Masters, the field is tough but qualifying for state is relatively simple: Eight of the 11 in each bracket make state. So getting out of this weekend is a huge step.
Wrestling was scheduled to start about 35 minutes ago, but there was a problem with brackets, as there always seems to be at this tournament. Some wrestlers don't make weight, some get hurt, and others take their place. That changes the seeds, and the brackets need to be re-drawn. Seems like it happens every year.
But wrestlers were told to begin warm-ups about 5 minutes ago. We'll have wrestling around 10:45.
