Liberty rising junior Warren Miller received entry into the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship next week at The Woodlands, Texas, outside Houston.

Miller placed third in a qualifying tournament at Riverbend Golf Club in Madera earlier this month, shooting 73-73 in two rounds on the par-72 course. The top two finishers received autmatic entry to the U.S. Junior Amateur, but when Samuel Kim of Irvine, the runner-up, pulled out with an injury, Miller was given the bid.

Kessler at Manning camp

USC quarterback Cody Kessler, a Centennial graduate, is attending the famous Manning Passing Academy this weekend in Thibodaux, La.

Kessler, who led the Trojans to a 10-win season a year ago, will serve as a counselor at the camp, which is run by former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and his star sons, Peyton and Eli. College quarterbacks -- including Kessler, Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston of Florida State and fellow Pac-12 Conference QBs Sean Mannion of Oregon State and Stanford's Kevin Hogan -- help to instruct more than 1,000 high school quarterbacks.

Kessler also was named last week to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given annually to the most oustanding player in college football. There are 76 players on the initial list. USC opens the season Aug. 30 at home against Fresno State.
