Clovis West overpowers Stockdale in football, 44-12

By THE FRESNO BEE

CLOVIS -- Next for Clovis West High is top-seeded Bakersfield in the Central Section Division I football playoffs.

And just which Golden Eagles team will bus to the prep cathedral called Griffith Field next Friday for the quarterfinal?

The one that was mashed 28-0 by Clovis last week? Or the one that quickly turned a playoff opener into a scrimmage Thursday night at Lamonica Stadium while coasting past Stockdale 44-12?

Clovis West nose guard Austin Cox didn't hesitate to answer: "We're going to smack Bakersfield. We are definitely going to show up for Bakersfield. I'm not saying it's going to be an easy win; they will be a challenge as the No. 1 team in the Valley. But this is our shot."

The Drillers routed Stockdale 37-6 last week. Mustangs coach Mike Snow presented a brief tale of the tape: "Clovis West might be bigger, but they're not faster. Bakersfield is unreal, speed-wise. And it's across the board -- offensive line, defensive line, everywhere."

Snow's Mustangs fell behind quickly Thursday.

And it occurred in a dreadful manner as Gonzalez blocked a punt into the end zone for a safety; Cox torpedoed a fake punt; Eagles receiver Andre Chachere caught a 10-yard touchdown; and Salazar returned an interception 22 yards for a score.

That made it 16-0 Clovis West late in the first.

Golfers finish season

Six Kern County girls golfers finished their seasons at the CIF Southern Cal regional at the Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrieta on Thursday.

Four of them shot 81 on the par-72 course: Stockdale's Jessica Park and Lexi Keene, Bakersfield Christian's Julia Stewart and Centennial's Amy Cooper. Liberty's Mallory Wells shot 82 and Highland's Vanessa Watkins carded 87.

Only three teams and top nine individuals advanced to next week's state finals. It took 73 or better to make the cut individually.
