Kern County singles players will have to play the underdog role at the Central Section Boys Tennis Individual Championships this weekend in Wasco.
None of the qualifiers from last weekend's South Area tournament was seeded better than East High's Samuel Ramirez at No. 4 -- behind No. 1 Andrew Gong of Visalia-Central Valley Christian, No. 2 Viran Batth of Fresno-Bullard and No. 3 Allen Wang of Clovis-Buchanan.
Right behind Ramirez are the other South Area qualifiers: No. 5 Anthony Busacca of Liberty, No. 6 Sullivan Roche of Bakersfield Christian and No. 7 Chris Robles of Garces. Only Roche, who finished fourth in the section in 2011, has made a deep run in the singles draw. Busacca won the doubles title last year with Matt Sewell.
Ridgeview's Brian Yanez received the South Area's only wild card entry. He's seeded ninth and will play No. 8 Zain Amro of Buchanan in the first round, which begins at 9 a.m. Friday. Semifinals and the championship match are scheduled for 9 a.m. and noon Saturday.
In doubles, Drew Engel and Andrew Raney of Liberty are seeded No. 2, behind Patrick Huls and Michael Sasso of Clovis West.
Other Kern County qualifiers are No. 4 John Matthew Flores-Matt Nisson of Stockdale, No. 7 Patrick Nasser and Nizam Khan of Stockdale and No. 8 Nolan Schuler-Tanner Harris of BCHS.
The doubles tournament begins at 10:30 a.m. Friday, again with semifinals and the championship at 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday.
