2013 BVarsity All-Area Football Team

Player of the Year

Asauni Rufus * Bakersfield

QB * 6-0, 190 * senior

His transcendent season included more than 1,500 yards passing and rushing and seemed to get better as the year went on. It culminated with a winning touchdown against in the Southern Cal regional final against San Marcos-Mission Hills and 184 yards rushing in a state-championship victory against Loomis-Del Oro.

Offensive Player of the Year

Sheldon Croney * Garces

RB * 6-1, 215 * junior

Bruising running back picked up early scholarship offers from Colorado State and Boise State and a whole bunch of yards after contact. He finished with 2,377 yards and 28 touchdowns rushing and set school records for single-season, career touchdowns and single-season yardage and single-game yardage with 380 against Golden Valley.

Defensive Player of the Year

Grant Bouma * Bakersfield Christian

LB * 6-3, 220 * senior

He finished the year with 247 tackles, tied for second in the nation in MaxPreps' database. That included six games with at least 20 tackles and 18 takedowns in a D-IV state-championship loss to Modesto-Central Catholic. Bouma also had three interceptions.

First-team offense

Joseph Blewett, Tehachapi

OL/DL * 6-1, 215 * senior

Three-year starter on a Tehachapi offensive line that doesn't accept anything but excellence and this year paved the way for 3,414 rushing yards and another winning season.

Jarred Dorton * North

OL/DL * 6-7, 285 * senior

Once-mammoth right tackle shed some 30 pounds in the offseason and became a lean, mean blocking machine. His highlights are full of pancakes, and his mailbox is full of Mountain West-type recruiting letters.

Keith Evans * South

All-purpose * 6-1, 195 * senior

First-team all-SYL receiver excelled at the position, catching 26 passes for 539 yards (20.7 average) and 10 touchdowns, but he a lot of other things well, too, rushing for 344 yards (7.0 average), returning a punt for a touchdown and even throwing for a touchdown.

David Grimm * Garces

OL/DL * 6-3, 225 * senior

Agile lineman helped pave the way for Sheldon Croney and Garces' formidable running game. Grimm also snagged a key interception on defense and returned it for a touchdown in a win against Stockdale.

Ruben Guerra * Liberty

OL * 6-4, 278 * junior

The Patriots' best offensive lineman was first-team all-SWYL and helped block for one of the section's most balanced attacks. Liberty rushed for 2,260 yards and threw for 1,783 behind Guerra and Co.

Jack Harding * Centennial

OL/DL * 5-8, 245 * senior

In Kevin Sneed's first year at Centennial, he established a run-heavy veer offense that relied on linemen like Harding, who learned the system and cleared a path for more than 2,400 yards rushing at more than 7 yards per carry. First team all-SWYL.

Josh Jackson * Bakersfield Christian

WR/DB * 5-11, 155 * senior

Easily the area's leading receiver in every major category, Jackson finished with 66 catches for 1,458 yards and 17 touchdowns. He eclipsed 100 yards seven times, including the state-championship game.

Brandon Jones * Bakersfield Christian

QB * 6-2, 185 * junior

Jones transferred from Bakersfield High and only had the most prolific passing season in Central Section history. His 4,360 yards and 54 touchdowns passing were both section records, according to section historian Bob Barnett, and he did that while throwing only 10 interceptions in 429 attempts.

Dillon Littles * Bakersfield

OL * 6-3, 210 * senior

A former wide receiver, Littles made the odd jump to tackle and simply excelled, helping to move the Drillers' ball-carriers to the second level of the defense before they were touched in Bakersfield's lethal option offense.

Anthony Mariscal * Liberty

RB/DB * 6-0, 185 * junior

One of the area's top junior recruits, Mariscal ran for 1,089 yards (7.4 average) and 11 touchdowns against a difficult schedule. When a shoulder injury sequestered him to defense only in the Patriots' D-I quarterfinal against Clovis, the Liberty's offense struggled while he returned an interception for a touchdown on defense.

Richard Nourse * Shafter

WR/DB * 5-11, 165 * senior

One of three area receivers to eclipse 1,000 yards, Nourse also caught 10 touchdown passes and averaged 23.8 yards per catch. His biggest games came in back-to-back weeks: 263 yards and 5 touchdowns against Arvin, and 151 yards and two more scores against Chavez.

Josh Nunez * Bakersfield

OL * 5-10, 215 * senior

Another key cog in a small-but-agile Drillers' line that helped its offense gain more than 6,000 yards in 15 games. That included 4,489 rushing yards and 68 touchdowns on an average of 8.1 yards per carry.

Brandon Robinson * Centennial

RB/DB * 5-11, 180 * sophomore

A transfer from Independence, Robinson quickly felt at home in the Golden Hawks' backfield, rushing for 1,216 yards and 13 touchdowns (despite missing a game with injury) at a whopping 10.2 yards per carry.

Zac Sullivan * Liberty

K * 5-9, 178 * senior

He made 8 of 12 field goals, including a 49-yarder against Buchanan and two crucial kicks in a one-point win against Stockdale. An even bigger impact might have come on kickoffs, where Sullivan had 41 touchbacks on 60 tries.

Anthony Wood * Stockdale

RB/LB * 5-11, 190 * senior

The most explosive player on Stockdale's double-wing offense, Wood ran for 1,341 yards and 19 touchdowns, including four-touchdown games in back-to-back weeks against Buchanan and Independence. He was first-team all-SWYL.

First-team defense

George Borba * Garces

OL/LB * 5-11, 185 * senior

Man in the middle sparked the Rams' defensive turnaround, which helped the team reach the Division II section final for the third straight season. Borba was the leading tackler on a defense that allowed no more than 14 points in seven straight games late in the season.

Marcus Bruce * Bakersfield

RB/LB * 5-9, 190 * junior

The Drillers' defense includes six linebackers/linemen who dance around the line of scrimmage, and the best of them was Bruce, the SWYL's defensive co-MVP. He also rushed for 541 yards and 8 touchdowns as one of the Drillers' regular running backs.

David Carter * Tehachapi

RB/LB * 5-10, 205 * senior

Physical linebacker led a tough Warriors defense with 135 tackles. He also made two sacks and an interception and was first-team all-SEYL.

Mykeil Clayton * Ridgeview

RB/LB * 5-9, 225 * junior

The SYL's defensive MVP led a second-half Wolf Pack resurgence that ended with a third straight trip to the Division III section finals after upset victories against Washington Union and Porterville in the playoffs.

Ethan Cullifer * Stockdale

TE/LB * 5-10, 185 * junior

A sideline-to-sideline player who emerged to earn first-team SWYL honors. Cullifer had several games with double-digit tackles and finished the year with three sacks.

Dayton Diorio * Frontier

P * 6-3, 211 * senior

Diorio had a great leg -- his average of 37.5 yards per punt was second-best in the county -- but his real strength came in touch. Nine of his 25 punts landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line, helping the Titans flip field position regularly.

Demetrius Eaton * South

DL * 6-0, 275 * senior

The Rebels' big boy in the middle was credited with 13 tackles and 14 quarterback hurries, but what he did best was clog the middle of the opposing line. It helped South to a 7-0 start and the program's first league title since 1995.

Colton Foster * Frontier

OL/DL * 6-4, 285 * senior

Despite missing most of three games with recurring injuries, Foster, a Colorado State commit, made 48 tackles and 4.5 sacks and generally disrupted opposing offenses at the point of attack.

Dominic Frasch * Garces

WR/DB * 5-11, 180 * senior

One of Kern County's fastest players, Frasch had 887 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, and he returned a kickoff for another TD. His biggest impact, however, was as the SEYL's Defensive MVP. He often blanketed the opposing team's best receiver.

Kevin Hayes * Bakersfield

WR/DB * 6-4, 175 * senior

An Oregon State verbal commit, Hayes made multiple interceptions and excelled despite routinely drawing some of the section's and state's best receivers. He made an 89-yard pick-six in the state championship and also caught 24 passes for 416 yards on offense.

Joseph Hurtado * Liberty

OL/DL * 6-2, 231 * senior

The SWYL's defensive co-MVP was a game-changer on the line, recording 64 tackles, 8 sacks and 17 quarterback hurries against some of the best offenses in the Central Section. Helped Liberty to a 9-1 regular season and the No. 2 seed in the section Division I playoffs.

Jeremiah Reddick * Bakersfield

RB/LB * 6-0, 200 * senior

Another of the Drillers' two-way standouts, Reddick ran for 623 yards and 9 touchdowns and was an every-down defender on Bakersfield's aggressive defense.

Matt Smith * Bakersfield Christian

RB/DL * 6-1, 210 * junior

Was an easy first-team selection on offense or defense. Smith ran for 1,694 yards and 21 touchdowns but increased his presence on the defensive side of the ball even more, recording 86 tackles and 9 sacks as a menacing defensive end.

Derrick Vickers * Bakersfield

RB/WR/DB * 6-0, 190 * senior

Either Vickers or Hayes was the Drillers' fastest player, and Vickers used that speed to the tune of 674 yards rushing, 466 yards receiving and a tremendous season at safety that included the regional-clinching interception against Mission Hills.
