It took a second-half rally and a defensive stop in the final seconds for Garces to beat Centennial 45-44 Saturday in the championship game of the Lady Mustangs Holiday Roundup girls basketball tournament at Stockdale.

"They have a lot of heart," Rams coach Tod Denison said. "We got into foul trouble and we had to take our (post players) out. For a while there I was a little worried, but everyone else stepped up to the plate. I give all the credit to Centennial because they're a good team, and if we play them again all the games would end up like this."

The Golden Hawks (8-4) took a 26-23 lead into halftime and started the third quarter on an 8-2 run, but then Denison called a timeout with 5:14 left in the quarter and the Rams were able to answer back with a 10-4 run to end the quarter.

Garces (14-3) went on its run while star center C.J. West was on the bench due to foul trouble.

"When we had to take out our people who were in foul trouble, the rest of the team went on a little bit of a run so without our starters in there it kind of got us back into it," said Denison. "I just tried to tell them to hang close, within striking range, and when we get everyone back from foul trouble in the fourth, we'll just take a shot at it."

In the fourth quarter, the Rams took that shot with the starters back in, and thanks to two free throws by forward Chenoa Beruman with 4:46 left in the game, the Rams took their first lead since early in the second quarter.

But Centennial fired back with a 3-pointer from forward Julianna Olvera. With only 1:05 left, the Rams got the lead back again, 45-44, thanks to a layup by West.

After back-to-back defensive stops on both sides, Centennial had one more chance with 14.4 seconds left but a steal by guard Lisa Daguea with only 2.4 seconds left helped Garces to hold off the Golden Hawks.

"It was definitely a great feeling," Daguea said of her steal. "I was glad to help us overcome the deficit and to put forth my effort for the team to win."

West, named the tournament MVP, led Garces with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Forward Riley Tucker added six points and seven rebounds.
