Ridgeview graduate Ivan Gonzalez, the state champion in the 800 meters at this month's CIF State Track and Field Championships, will run collegiately at Cal.

Ridgeview coach Adam Setser confirmed that Tuesday, saying the Golden Bears came through with a grant and scholarship combination that will pay Gonzalez's expenses in full.

Gonzalez, who started running competitively only as a sophomore, ran as fast as 1:50.59 in the 800 this season, the second-fastest time in the state and No. 13 nationally among high schoolers.

He ran 1:50.71 to win the state final, though Setser said Cal coaches said Gonzalez's best time could be much lower, given the right conditions.

"After watching him run, they said they think he can run 1:48.5, today, and I agree with them," Setser said. "And a 1:49 would have gotten him into this year's (NCAA Championships)."

Gonzalez will celebrate the signing at noon Friday at Ridgeview.
