TAFT -- West High's boys and Garces' girls didn't win many individual events at Saturday's Wildcat Invitational, but overall, their teams came through when it counted.

The Vikings, led by Fondereaux Wilson's triple-jump title and Barrington Lewis' victory in the 300-meter hurdles, won the boys championship, while Garces won the girls title behind two titles from Julianne Finch, Jessica Taylor's discus win and Jamie Penner's 12.88-second championship in the 100.

West, which also won the boys 1,600 relay, scored 101.5 points to edge Ridgeview (89.83) in the boys team race. Garces, led by Penner, also won the 1,600 relay and scored 78.5 points to beat Wasco (70) and Ridgeview (69.5) in a wide-open girls race.

The meet's big stars showed up. Finch, ranked third in the Central Section in the pole vault, cleared 9-foot-6 to win the event. She also ran 16.69 to win the 100 hurdles. Wilson, who ranks second in the section in the triple jump, had a best mark of 43-6.5 Saturday.

Big performances by Ramon Flores in the boys 1,600 and She Pree Brevil in the girls horizontal jumps helped Ridgeview to strong finishes in both team races.

Flores finished the 1,600 in 4:37.62, nearly half a second faster than second-place Daniel Aguirre of West, helping the Wolf Pack to a second-place team finish. Brevil jumped a season-best 33-11 to win the triple jump and added a 16-3 to win the long jump.

Ridgeview also saw good performances by Daizhiana Elbert, who finished third in the 100 (13.22), and Herman Day, who was third in the boys 110 hurdles and part of Ridgeview's second-place squad in the 400 relay.

Another notable was Golden Valley's Mariah Ayala. She won the girls 1,600 after starting from the middle of the group and coming from behind in the last few meters to beat Highland's Savannah Berry by half-second in the finals.

"That was exhausting," Ayala said. "I started off pretty fast, but I stayed behind a few steps. Toward the end I knew I had to finish strong, so I just pushed past her."

Berry came back to win the 3,200 in 11:43.29.

Ayala also placed first in the 2,000-meter steeplechase by approximately 27 seconds.

Wasco's Carlos Morfin won the boys 100 (11.33) and 200 (23.22), and he also ran on the Tigers' winning 400 relay (45.18). North's Curtis Threlkeld swept the middle distances, taking the 400 in 51.40 and the 800 in 2:01.54.

Bakersfield Christian's Matt Smith won the discus with a toss of 174-4, improving his season-best and remaining second in the section rankings.
