Behind a strong pitching performance by Andy Cantu, Golden Valley beat host West High 8-3 in a South Yosemite League baseball game on Friday.

Cantu (2-2) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts against the Vikings (3-7, 0-2).

"Andy was sharp," Golden Valley coach Mike Gibson said.

"He only threw 10 pitches in the first two innings, and then he started to get tired in the fifth and the sixth. We ran him out there in the seventh. We had our closer ready, but we didn't need him because (Cantu) had a quick inning.

"(That kind of pitching) keeps the opponent down, and allows us the opportunity to come up here and swing the bat. Quick innings are great. It puts everyone's attitude in the right place and they're excited to come up and hit right away."

He added that he thought the Bulldogs (8-3, 2-1) played well against a good Vikings' team.

"West High is a good team, but they helped us out and gave us a few extra outs, which enabled us to score a few more runs than we might have," Gibson said.

Golden Valley grabbed the momentum in the third inning when Blesam Sadang helped the Bulldogs get going.

With Xavier De Leon on first, Sadang drove a ball down the right-foul line, just past right fielder John Hirojoso. DeLeon and Sadang wound up with a triple. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Rodriguez. West committed two errors to lead to another Golden Valley run to make it 3-0.

"They extended the inning for us, and we were able to capitalize and got a couple extra hitters to the plate, and once you get that momentum it really works," Gibson said.

"I thought we hit the ball pretty well. We hit the ball well in situations which we worked on batting practice and that certainly helped move runners along to score runs for us."

Rodriguez led the way going 2 of 4 with three RBIs. Sadang was 2 of 3.

For the Vikings, Elias Legoretta took the loss, striking out three in six innings. Julian Estrada went 2 of 4 with two RBIs.
