Bakersfield Christian's high-powered offense is getting a lot of attention, and it deserves it.

But don't forget about the Eagles' defense.

BCHS won its sixth straight game Friday, pulling away in the second half to romp past South 38-7 in a non-league game at South.

Eagles' quarterback Brandon Jones had a lower-than-usual pass completion percentage, only 12-of-29 with an interception. But he had four touchdown passes, giving him 32 in BCHS's eight games this season.

BCHS (6-2) had tallied at least 43 points and had outscored its opponents 275-70 in its last five games prior to Friday, but only led 14-0 at halftime.

South (6-2) lost its second straight.

The Eagles limited the Rebels to five first downs -- and only two in the second half. South's defense had two interceptions, recovered two fumbles, had four sacks and 13 tackles for lost yardage.

The Rebels had only three net rushing yards and three net passing yards in the second half, and that included a 24-yard run.

Jones had two TD passes each to Josh Jackson (29 and 23 yards) and Hayden Kuchta (24 and 5). Jackson finished with 185 yards on seven receptions.

Junior running back Matt Smith reached 4,000 career rushing yards on a 5-yard gain in the second quarter. He had a 5-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and finished with 101 yards on 20 carries.

Jones lost a fumble when sacked in the third quarter and South's Isaiah Mireles returned it 40 yards for the only South touchdown.

The Rebels had two great scoring chances in the first half.

Running back Kenneth Martinez's apparent 39-yard touchdown run on South's second possession in the first quarter was called back because of a holding penalty.

South also had a first down on the BCHS 15-yard line with 7:58 left in the second quarter after Darrell Clark blocked an Eagles' punt. But that drive ended two plays later when BCHS' Keith Blank went high in the air for a spectacular interception at the 3-yard line.

Jones' numbers could have been better. At least one potential touchdown pass was dropped, one of several dropped passes by the Eagles.

South was missing senior Keith Evans, who is second on the team in touchdowns, the team leader in pass receptions and receiving yardage and the No. 3 rusher, and No. 2 rusher Asonte Johnson. Both were sidelined for undisclosed disciplinary reasons, a source close to the team said.

Johnnie Dirden, who came into the game as South's leading scorer (11 TDs) and rusher (591 yards) was held to 11 net yards on 11 carries.
