Garces girls basketball team and Bakersfield Christian's girls soccer team were rewarded Sunday for Central Section championships with home games in the first round of the CIF state playoffs.
The Rams (30-3), fresh off a 49-31 victory over Tulare Western for the Division II section title, were seeded No. 5 in Southern California and will host No. 12 Riverside-Patriot (25-4) in the first round of the D-II state playoffs at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Should Garces win, it would play Saturday in the Southern Cal quarterfinals.
The soccer Eagles (26-3) are seeded No. 2 and host No. 7 Van Nuys-Fulton College Prep at 4 p.m. today. If BCHS wins, it would play at home again Wednesday in the Southern Cal semifinals. The Southern Cal finals are Friday at Warren High School in Downey (only Southern Cal teams participate in soccer during the winter).
South High's boys soccer team also received a regional playoff bid. The Rebels (16-7-5), who won four road games to win the D-III Central Section title, will hit the road again Tuesday as the No. 7 seed in the Division II SoCal bracket.
They play at Simi Valley-Royal at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Several other local basketball teams were given low seeds in the state playoffs even though they didn't win section titles: In D-I girls, No. 16 Centennial at No. 1 Moreno Valley-Canyon Springs; in D-III girls, No. 16 Shafter at No. 1 Santa Barbara; in D-IV girls, No. 15 McFarland at No. 2 Chatsworth-Sierra Canyon; in D-V girls, an all-Kern County matchup of No. 11 Kern Valley at No. 6 Desert; In D-III boys, No. 14 Independence at No. 3 Rancho Santa Margarita-Santa Margarita; in D-IV boys, No. 13 Bakersfield Christian at No. 4 Montebello-Cantwell Sacred Heart; and in D-V boys, No. 11 Kern Valley at No. 6 Santa Clarita Christian
All first-round basketball games are at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
