Stockdale junior Blake Haney finished seventh in the most elite high school mile race in the country Saturday in New York City, setting his second Central Section record in the process.

Haney's time of 4:07.78 in the Dream Mile in New York City converts to 4:06.35 in the 1,600 meters. The old section record in that race was 46 years old -- a 4:06.4 ran by Peter Romero of Reedley in 1967.

Haney already set the 3,200-meter section record with an 8:48.58, ran earlier this spring at the Arcadia Invitational.

Ben Saarel, a senior from Park City (Utah), won that race and also won the Dream Mile on Saturday in 4:02.72.

Haney stayed with the lead pack in the race until the final 200 meters, when Saarel separated to win by more than two seconds.

Haney will fly back to California and run for his first state titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 at the CIF State Track and Field Championships, on Friday and Saturday in Clovis.
