There's a new ending to Katie Cornford's high school athletic career, and it's a much better one.

Cornford, a Frontier senior who broke her leg in the Titans' final regular-season soccer game, was awarded the Mayor's Trophy on Wednesday night during the PEAAK Awards in the Harvey Auditorium at Bakersfield High.

"I thought I would be ending my sports career on that negative note," Cornford said, "but getting this award is beyond my wildest dreams. I've had a perfect four years at Frontier, and this is just icing on the cake."

Mayor Harvey Hall presented the perpetual award, given annually to one city senior who excels in athletics, academics, leadership and community service.

As a senior, Cornford was a captain and first-team all-league selection both as a volleyball setter and a soccer defender, and she won section championships in both sports during her high school career. Frontier's students voted her the school's outstanding female athlete this spring. Her father, Rich, is Frontier's football coach.

In addtion, Cornford is ranked No. 1 in Frontier's class, with a perfect grade-point average (4.5 the past two years), was the junior class and then senior class president and has an impressive community-service record that includes book drives, organ donation awareness and "Operation Orange," a Frontier orginization that, led by Cornford, raised hygenic packages to send to overseas troops. She also twice donated her hair to Locks of Love.

"Being a well-rounded student has always been important to me," said Cornford, who will study psychology at UCLA. "I'm a student first, and then an athlete a close second. I wanted to get involved in everything I could, and it made this such a memorable experience."

Cornford is the second Mayor's Trophy award winner from Frontier; Matt Darr won the award in 2010.

She beat out this deep field of finalists: Brena Andrews, Independence; Samantha Carbajal, South; Andrew Daughtery, Centennial; Derek Frost, Liberty; Sean Jansen, Foothill; Micah Mitchell, West; Bailey Ross, Bakersfield; Taylor Solorio, Highland; Jake Sweaney, Garces; and Jacob Thompson, Bakersfield Christian.
