Justin Nieto's three-run homer highlighted a five-run third inning Monday for Liberty High, which rolled to an 11-4 victory over Stockdale in the American Division championship of the 28th Terrio Therapy Spring Classic at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

It was the first title in the tournament for Liberty, which was a runner-up in 2005.

Four straight Patriots reached base to start their big inning. Hanz Harker provided an RBI single and Doug Wyman had an RBI sac fly before Nieto, a senior, followed with his home run for a 6-3 Liberty lead.

The Patriots added five more runs in the next two innings, including a two-run home run by senior Ross Puskarich, to pull away.

Tournament MVP Joey Rossi and Josh Medina each went 3-for-3 for the Patriots (6-1). Rossi had two RBIs and Medina scored three runs. Puskarich also scored three runs.

"We banged it around the yard pretty good," Liberty coach Tony Mills said.

"Our guys have a good approach at the plate. Our kids, one-through-nine, believe they can swing it and tonight we were fortunate to hit some balls. Some went out of the yard so we did a great job at the plate today."

Junior pitcher and two-year varsity veteran Luke Andrews recorded the win. He struck out three and walked one in six innings of work, allowing two earned runs

"He's pitched in big games before," said Mills. "Tonight was a championship game and he gave us a championship effort."

Liberty's Austin Palacios was named Most Valuable Pitcher of the tournament.

Jamie Carroll went 2 for 3 with two runs for the Mustangs.

Richard Garcia provided a walk-off single in the 7th inning of Independence's 3-2 victory over Bakersfield Christian in the National Division finale. Tyler Smith of the Falcons was named the Most Valuable Pitcher in the division.
