Bakersfield High took care of business in the Southwest Yosemite League Friday and got an added bonus from the Fresno area.

The Drillers earned an outright SWYL title with a 37-6 win over Stockdale at Griffith Field.

But even more important from the Drillers' perspective: that victory coupled with a loss by previously unbeaten Fresno-Edison, likely means a No. 1 seed and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs for Bakersfield when the Central Section finalizes its football seedings today.

Edison lost to Fresno-Bullard 24-14.

BHS coach Paul Golla said he wasn't "scoreboard watching" but acknowledged it was hard to ignore several scores that were reported over the PA system throughout the night.

"I kept hearing those scores," Golla said. "Our biggest thing: we took control of what we should have done and now it leads to seedings and see where we're at."

The Drillers are 8-2 overall and went 5-0 in the SWYL. Stockdale is 5-5 and 3-2.

The Edison-Bullard game did not end until nearly 30 minutes after the BHS-Stockdale game ended.

BHS senior quarterback Asauni Rufus had touchdown runs of 1, 10 and 9 yards and also completed 5-of-7 passes for 178 yards.

"The goal was to play assignment football and not be confused by their defense and their offense," said Rufus, who has scored 20 touchdowns this season.

"And we wanted to play passionate. Some plays we slipped up, but that's any game."

Golla said he hopes for further improvement by the Drillers as they begin their playoff season.

"We've got some work to do and our kids know it," Golla said. "Every week we have a goal to get 10 percent better.

"Now it's do-or-die. You hope to win the last game of the year. That's the goal."

Stockdale is also eligible for the Division I playoffs.

"It's a new season on Monday," said Stockdale coach Mike Snow. "We've got to get healthy. We've got some guys banged up, dinged up. We've to turn the page and learn from what we did tonight."

The Mustangs moved the ball with their vaunted ground game. They reached the Bakersfield 8-yard line in the first quarter and the Driller 20 in the second quarter before turning the ball over on downs to end both drives.

Bakersfield drove for touchdowns after those Mustang threats.

Stockdale finally scored in the fourth quarter on Xavier Chisholm's 70-yard run with 4:25 left. Bakersfield's other touchdowns were a 1-yard run by Johnathan Malone and a 4-yard run by backup quarterback Noah Holle.

The Drillers also got a safety when the Mustangs snapped the ball over the punter's head and into the end zone in the third quarter.

Chisholm had a game-high 121 rushing yards on 17 carries and Anthony Wood added 62 yards on 18 carries.

For the Drillers, Rufus had nine carries for 63 yards and Darrick Vickers added 55 yards on eight carries.

The Drillers led 21-0 at halftime despite running only 22 plays from scrimmage the first two quarters compared to 37 by Stockdale.

Bakersfield defensive backs Bryson Briggs and Kevin Hayes had interceptions and nearly returned them for touchdowns, going 96 and 50 yards, respectively, before being tackled.
