Stockdale High needed one win in its final two games to ensure a .500 regular season and postseason eligibility.

The Mustangs accomplished that Friday night, using their effective ground game to wear down Frontier 42-28 in a Southwest Yosemite League game.

Stockdale (5-4 overall, 3-1 SWYL) has a school policy that only teams with at least .500 records are eligible for the playoffs.

But Stockdale coach Mike Snow said league play was on his mind with SWYL leader Bakersfield as next week's opponent.

"We put ourselves in a position to play for a piece of the league championship. That's what we've focused on," Snow said.

As for the playoffs, Snow said: "It may have been in the backs of our minds, but no one is talking about that. ...

"Our last three weeks we're playing the best we have all season."

Frontier fell to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in SWYL play. Titans' coach Rich Cornford said before the game that Frontier does not have a .500 requirement but added that any playoff possibility would be up to principal Dan Shannon.

Stockdale's wing-T simply controlled the game's tempo. The Mustangs only punted once, and that came with less than five minutes remaining in the game and the Mustangs ahead by 21 points.

Stockdale's 1-2 running punch of Anthony Wood and Xavier Chisholm were simply too much for Frontier.

Wood finished with 160 yards on 22 carries, including fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 1 and 55 yards.

Chisholm finished with 116 yards on 19 carries and scored three first-half touchdowns.

Chisholm opened the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Drew Allen and added touchdown runs of 11 and 52 yards later in the half.

His 52-yard TD, with 10:39 left in the second quarter, showed Chisholm's savvy.

He took a handoff and cut to his right, slowed down momentarily, then burst full speed between two defenders and into a wide-open secondary. Chisholm easily outran the defense to the end zone.

Allen added another touchdown pass, a 28-yard leaping reception at the goal line by Maison Carey with 3:16 left in the half.

Frontier scored in the first quarter on Taylor Holmes' 1-yard blast up the middle to conclude a 71-yard drive that briefly tied the game 7-7.

Nick Santoro had touchdown runs of 9 and 1 yard in the second half and led Frontier with 93 yards on 21 carries.

Frontier added a score on an 84-yard pass from quarterback Caleb Thompson to Brooks Douglass, a perfectly thrown ball that Douglass caught in stride behind the Stockdale defense.

Thompson finished 9-of-21 for 188 yards. He came into the game with only 93 passing yards this season. Frontier starting quarterback Evan Moore, who has 1,130 passing yards this season, suffered a shoulder injury last week and did not play.

Frontier nearly had two other touchdowns.

Running back Troy Banks broke through the line of scrimmage on a third-and-7 run from the Titans' 32. He was slowed for a moment by a shoestring tackle attempt but he broke free.

Unfortunately for Frontier, as Banks broke free -- and he had a wide open field in front of him -- he appeared to pull a hamstring. He gained about 15 more yards while limping badly before he was tackled and then helped off the field. He did not return.

And with Frontier trailing 13-7 early in the second quarter, the Titans faced a third-and-19 from their own 11.

Thompson found a wide-open Jordan Nichols at the 25 and Nichols raced all the way downfield to the end zone. But the touchdown was nullified by a below-the-waist blocking penalty.
