ARVIN -- Isaiah Sharp took his game to a new level Friday night.

In the process he carried Wasco High to the cusp of an undefeated regular season and a South Sequoia League championship.

Sharp ran for a career-high 423 yards and four touchdowns as visiting Wasco claimed a 56-28 SSL victory over Arvin.

"Our line did a great job," Sharp said. "They gave me the holes to run through."

The victory didn't come easy for the Tigers, who came in having only allowed 71 points in its previous eight games.

The Bears started out strong, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions.

But Wasco (9-0, 5-0 SSL) matched the Bears score for score and eventually took its first lead of the contest, 28-21, on Sharp's 63-yard touchdown run with 4:16 remaining in the first half.

The Tigers then seemingly wore out Arvin (6-3, 3-2 SSL) in the second half, finishing the game with 640 yards rushing.

"We knew it was going to be tough," Wasco coach Russ Prado said. "Arvin is a tough ball club . They are very big up front and tough. They played a great game tonight but our boys were ready to rock and roll for four quarters. We knew this was going to be a four-quarter game."

With the win, Wasco clinched at least a share of the SSL title. The Tigers can win the league championship outright with a victory over Shafter next Friday.

"We do not want to share the title," Prado said. "We want to win it outright. We have a huge game next week. Shafter is a great, great team and we got to get ready to rock and roll for Shafter."

Orlando Perez had 130 yards rushing on 21 carries for Arvin, which mixed the pass and run with equal effectiveness in moving the ball deep into Wasco territory during all five of its first half possessions.

"I thought our kids played with a lot of effort tonight," Arvin coach Edgar Mares said. "We came out and matched them early in the first half and we were right there. They came out in the second half and made some adjustments and they were able to wear us down."

Arvin quarterback Jordan Wood was red-hot early, connecting on 3-of-4 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter. He capped the game's opening drive with a 57-yard touchdown pass to Marcos Alvarez.

Then, after Wasco drove 64 yards to tie the game on Kyle Wedel's 1-yard quarterback sneak, Wood hit Perez for a 34-yard touchdown pass.

Most of the work on that play was done by Perez, who juked out two defenders on his way to the end zone.

Sharp was unstoppable all game, but especially in the first two quarters, when he rushed for 239 yards on 12 carries.

"Our offensive line did a great job and Isaiah Sharp played like a man tonight," Prado said.
