Haney's incredible junior-season haul: Central Section records in the 1,600 meters (4:07.16), the mile (4:07.78) and the 3,200 meters (8:48.58), plus state titles in both distance events, a first for a Central Section runner. Only one other junior in state history had won both.

The Californian's Cross Country Athlete of the Year finished second in the section in the 1,600 (4:14.36) and second in the area in the 3,200. Fisher will run on scholarship at Cal Poly.

Won the section title in the shot put (56-7.5), then topped 60 feet for the second time in the state finals (60-2.25) to place fourth. A double league and area champion, he also finished third in the section and 12th in the state in the discus.
Frontier * junior * hurdles
A double area champion in the hurdles events, Gaeta led the section with a best time of 39.54 in the 300 hurdles and was one of only three section athletes to break 15 seconds in the 110 hurdles. He lost a shoe and finished sixth in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 300 at the section meet.
Ridgeview * senior * middle distance
A shoo-in Athlete of the Year in almost any other season, Gonzalez took the state by storm in the 800 meters, popping a 1:50.59 to win the section and then taking state by nearly a full second. He has signed with Cal.
Golden Valley * senior * sprints
After losing very tight races to Highland's Elijah Baier at the area meet, Matos sprinted to a double section championship in the 100 and 200. He then made the state final in the 200 and placed sixth with a best time of 21.64. The Cal State Fullerton signee was 11th in the 100 (10.70).
Independence * senior * high jump
His personal-best clearance of 6-9 ranked in the state's top 20 and won the area meet by five inches. He later placed fourth in the section and reached the state final in the event.
Bakersfield * junior * horizontal jumps
The only local boy besides Haney to medal in two events at state, Newton was fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. His season bests of 24-2.75 and 49-0 both led the section and ranked in the state's top 10.
Bakersfield Christian * sophomore * throws
