Frontier senior Lauren O'Connell listened to Mayor Harvey Hall list off the accomplishments of the 38th winner of the Mayor's Trophy on Wednesday at Harvey Auditorium and suddenly realized whom Hall was describing.

"He said she was a varsity captain first, and literally, I'm thinking, 'No way,'" O'Connell said.

It became more obvious as Hall went on to open the Kern High School District's fourth annual PEAAK Awards: Three-time all-Southwest Yosemite League girls soccer selection; two-time BVarsity All-Area pick and this year's Co-BVarsity Girls Soccer Player of the Year. O'Connell was the winner of the award, which is presented each year to the city's outstanding senior in athletics, academics, leadership and community service.

"It's an honor to have my name on that trophy," O'Connell said. "So many students in Bakersfield do so much that I'm proud even to be nominated."

Besides O'Connell's athletic achievements -- the 5-foot-10 defender, will play for Baylor next season -- she boasts a robust resume off the field. She's ranked seventh in a class of 565 with a 4.45 grade-point average; served as freshman class president, sophomore class president and ASB vice president; and has volunteered as the Houchin Blood Bank Chairperson, in Soles for Souls, the Distinguished Young Women Production Crew and as a youth soccer coach.

O'Connell was selected out a list of finalists that included at least two valedictorians and several of the Central Section's best athletes: Savannah Berry, Highland; Sophia Busacca, Liberty; Patrick Crowley, Bakersfield; Marshall Garcia, West; Kate Hamilton, Garces; Braxton Huggins, Mira Monte; Claryce Lazerson, Bakersfield Christian; Dennis Reed, Independence; and Janeyle Thomas, South.

Twenty-seven other PEAAK -- that's Promoting Excellence in Athletics & Activities in Kern -- Awards were handed out. Bakersfield High quarterback Asauni Rufus won Best Male Athlete and Best Play, and his Drillers team won the Tradition of Excellence Award. Frontier swimmer Jorie Caneta was the Best Female Athlete. Golden Valley's Jesus Silvestre, who overcame a serious leg injury to compete in the pole vault, won Greatest Comeback. Berry and Crawley won Best Female and Male Student-Athlete, respectively.
