Tyler Hughes - Garces

Among the players are three from Centennial's Division I Central Section champions: Daisy Hatcher, Davalin Ontiveros and Samantha Campos.

All seniors were welcome, as long as they played a full year of varsity and graduated from their respective high schools.

Since 1996, the senior showcase has seen many notables. The most successful is also a Golden Hawk, UCLA graduate Megan Langenfeld, who was voted the Most Outstanding Player of the Women's College World Series in 2010.

Garces hires volleyball coach

There's another Roberts coaching volleyball in Kern County. Sort of.

Garces hired Lacey Coppollo on Tuesday to lead its volleyball program into the Southwest Yosemite League era. Coppollo is the former Lacey Roberts and is the daughter of Randy and Brooke Roberts, the legendary coaching duo at Centennial.

Brooke Roberts won a state-record 884 matches, plus a section-record 24 league titles, 14 section titles, eight section runner-up finishes and two state championships. She retired after last season.

Part of Brooke Roberts' run was with Lacey as a player. Lacey Roberts won two Division I section championships as a player at Centennial and then played four years for Vanguard University. She later earned a Master's degree from Cal State Bakersfield before assisting her mother at Centennial for the past seven years.

Eke commits to COS

Two-time first-team All-Area basketball player Fatai Eke, of East, verbally committed to play for College of the Sequoias in Visalia, COS coach Rusty Smith said.

Eke, a 6-foot-7 center who averaged 18.7 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.7 blocks per game for the Blades as a senior, joins another graduating All-Area player, Centennial's Derek Check, on the COS roster.

Dolinar honored for rugby

Rugby Magazine named Stockdale graduate David Dolinar to its All-American Lock honorable mention list last week. Dolinar, who plays for the U.S. Naval Academy, led the Midshipmen to the Varsity Cup semifinals, where they lost to eventual national champion BYU. He will also try out for the All-American national team this summer in Boston.

Haney, Cumberland win title

Liberty product Bryan Haney and his Cumberland University baseball team completed their run to the NAIA national baseball title with a 3-0 victory over Lewis-Clark (Idaho) State in the World Series championship game Friday in Lewiston, Idaho.

Haney, a catcher, started 36 of 49 games, including all six World Series games. He batted .211 with six doubles, a home run and 16 RBIs, and his on-base percentage was .333.
