High school notebook: Rams garner top seeds in tennis

Garces' girls tennis team might have been eliminated from the Central Section playoffs Tuesday, but the Rams are still favored to win some hardware.
The team earned the No. 1 seed in both singles and doubles for this weekend's individual section championships at Redwood High School in Visalia.

Gracie Jacobs, a senior who finished as section runner-up each of the past two years, is the No. 1 seed in singles. No. 2 is Megan Lee of Clovis-Buchanan, followed by No. 3 Ariana Tilbury, a Stockdale freshman.
Other locals in the 16-player bracket are No. 7 Emily Horrigan, another Stockdale freshman; No. 9 Isabella Busacca of Liberty; and No. 15 Darian Grisso of Tehachapi and No. 16 Tara Miller of Bakersfield Christian, both of whom were given wild cards after losing in the quarterfinals of the area tournament.
In doubles, the Garces pair of Crimson Hochhalter-Riley Tucker is seeded No. 1, followed by Stockdale's top team of Prutha Mehta-Claire Heffernan.
Tournament play starts at 10 a.m. Friday, with singles quarterfinals scheduled for 1 p.m. and doubles quarters at 2:30. On Saturday, semifinals go off at noon, with singles and doubles championships at 2 p.m.
Wasco up to No. 4
Wasco, the Central Section's only 9-0 football team, moved up three spots to No. 4 in Cal Hi Sports' Southern California Division III bowl rankings.
The Tigers, who benefited from a loss by previous No. 4 Tulare-Mission Oak, beat Arvin 56-28 -- their closest win of the season.
Should they beat rival Shafter in their regular-season finale Friday and then win the section's Division IV title, the Tigers would be in consideration for a berth in the Division III regional bowl game against an opponent from either the San Diego Section or Southern Section. The winner of that game would play in the D-III state bowl championship Dec. 15 at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
Garces remained No. 12 in the Division II Southern Cal rankings.
Freedom Bowl Food Drive
A charitable new tradition between football rivals Centennial and Liberty starts this year with the Freedom Bowl Food Drive.
Fans of the Golden Hawks and Patriots are asked to bring non-perishable food items to their school's athletic office or to their school's table at the teams' 7:30 p.m. game Friday night at Liberty. The food will be donated to the Bakersfield Homeless Center.
The school that collects the most food will be awarded the perpetual Freedom Bowl Food Drive trophy at halftime of the football game.
Harvick to help North wrestling program
North High alumnus and NASCAR star Kevin Harvick, in partnership with the TapouT apparel company, will present new uniforms to the North wrestling team at a school pep rally Tuesday.
Harvick, who wrestled for the Stars, also will award a $5,000 scholarship to a North High senior carrying at least a 3.0 grade-point average who wins an essay contest on overcoming adversity in life.
Tudor picks Hawkeyes
Shafter High distance runner Cambria Tudor has made a verbal commitment to sign with the University of Iowa.
Tudor chose the Hawkeyes over Pacific, San Jose State and Charleston Southern, among others. She will run track and cross country for Iowa and can sign a national letter of intent later this month.
BHS seeking coaches
Bakersfield High is looking for a trio of coaches for spring sports: varsity softball coach, frosh/soph baseball coach and varsity baseball pitching coach.
