Heavyweight Jarrod Synder won in overtime in the finals to highlight a big day for Frontier, who captured title in the Kern County Invite wrestling tournament at Centennial on Saturday.

After beating East High's Chris Bueno 1-0, Synder North High's Mark Guerrero battled in the heavyweight final.

After three rounds, it was tied at 3, forcing overtime. Synder finally got a takedown with 33 seconds left and held on for a 5-3 decision.

"It's tough to describe," said Synder on the overtime win. "It was my first time winning like that and in a big match. It was my first varsity tournament that I've won, it's just unbelievable.

"I think I had a good performance here. I did a lot of things I usually don't do and it was good all around. [Guerrero] was a good opponent for me and it was just a good tournament for me."

Frontier coach Daniel Chapman felt that Synder performed well and exceeded expectations.

"I think (Synder) performed his butt off," Chapman said. "I think he did very good and he exceeded expectations. He's a tough kid and he's got a very bright future ahead of him."

The Titans beat 27 other teams handily, and outscored second-place Bakersfield High 286-204.5.

Along with Synder, Frontier also had Carlos Montejo (182) take first place. They had five other wrestlers wrestle in the finals.

In one of the best matches of the day, Jacob Delgado from Visalia-El Diamante, who garnered lowerweights most outstanding wrestler award, faced off against Elijiah Ozuna at 120. Ozuna was in control after Delgado injured his shoulder midway through the second round. Ozuna was up 5-2 going into the third, but with less than a minute left Delgado tied it up and then got the win by pin with 32 seconds left.

"It was fantastic," said Delgado, "Even though I was hurt I fought through it and just to win it, felt good."

Though Bakersfield took second, they were tied for most first-place winners. Dillon Cravers (113), Mark Rodriguez (126) and Joshua Annis (138) all took first for the Drillers. El Dorado-Placentia took third with 173 and tied with the Drillers for the most first-place winners. Gino Roman (152), Connor Duke (160), who also was voted the middleweights outstanding wrestler award, and Michael Miller (170) all got first.

Host Centennial took fourth with 133 and had two first-place winners in Etienne Armijo (132) and Alex Treiberg (152). Liberty placed fifth with 123, but didn't have anyone get first place. The upperweights most outstanding wrestler award went to Wasco's Jose Robledo, who also got first place at 195.
