CARSON — In the end, there was never a doubt this would be the team that returned state-championship rings to California Avenue.

Bakersfield High beat Loomis-Del Oro 56-26 for the CIF Division I State Bowl Championship on Friday night at the StubHub Center, capping a dominant postseason run that gave the Drillers their record seventh state championship.

“We’ve left our legacy, all of us,” senior quarterback Asauni Rufus said, and that goes for him especially after he burned Del Oro for 184 yards rushing, 71 yards passing and three total touchdowns. “We did all of our homework, and it paid off.”

It’s the first state title for BHS in the state bowl era, which began in 2006; after the Drillers won their sixth title in 1927, the state disbanded all state playoffs for the next 79 years. Now the new era of Bakersfield football, led by ninth-year coach Paul Golla, has made its mark, too.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Golla said. “Our administration has been incredible, and it goes all the way up to the district level. You don’t win championships by accident, and it starts at the top.”

Bakersfield (13-2) scored on its first four possessions, with Rufus leading the Drillers’ lightning option attack. Del Oro (13-3), the Northern California champion, tried to keep pace behind senior running back Dylan Kainrath, who ran for 115 of his 198 yards in the first half.

“Del Oro is a great team,” Rufus said. “They’re one of the greatest teams in the state, and they made us earn it. The scoreboard doesn’t show how hard this game was.”

But any time the Golden Eagles faltered, Bakersfield pounced, and the lead was 28-14 before a minute had gone by in the second quarter, at which point Rufus already had 100 yards rushing and a zig-zagging, demoralizing 21-yard touchdown run that was made for the highlight reel.

“We knew they had a lot of speed,” Del Oro coach Casey Taylor said. “Their quarterback is special. You can’t simulate that kind of speed in practice. He puts them in a great position. There’s no doubt he was the best player on the field tonight.”

Del Oro recovered from the early onslaught to trail just 28-17 at halftime, and the Golden Eagles again rallied within two possessions at 42-26 midway through the fourth quarter. But both times, Bakersfield responded by landing a one-two flurry.

In the third quarter, with the score still 28-17 and BHS apparently stopped, Kevin Hayes ran for 12 yards on a fake punt to convert a fourth-and-4. On the next play, Jeremiah Reddick went 47 yards for a touchdown. Four plays after that, Nate Stancil intercepted Del Oro quarterback Michael Moore and returned it to the 1-yard line to set up another touchdown. Boom, bang, 42-17.

When Del Oro threatened again in the fourth, Rufus went 64 yards to the 1 to set up Marcus Bruces’ 1-yard touchdown run, and on the next drive, Hayes tacked on an exclamation point with an 89-yard interception-return touchdown. Bang, boom, 56-26.

“We’re a tough-minded team,” Rufus said. “We’ve reacted great all year to adversity, and we did it again tonight. That just shows the character we have on this team.”

By the time Hayes had finished off his pick-six — one of four Bakersfield interceptions — the Drillers were dancing on the sideline and Golla was soon to be drenched with a shower from the Gatorade bucket. Bakersfield High was a state champion.

“Ooh, say that again,” Golla said. “… It’s surreal. We’re just really blessed. I don’t know if there are words to describe it. We’ll enjoy this one for a while.”

A few minutes later, Golla held the state-championship trophy up to his players. The big Drillers crowd — the two-game attendance was 5,923 — gave one last full-throated cheer. And the tradition of Bakersfield High football roared on.

“It’s an indescribable feeling,” Hayes said. “I’m so glad to be a part of this. There’s been so many great players before us. It’s great to be a part of that legacy.”
