Bakersfield Christian vs. Modesto Cen. Catholic

D-IV state bowl game in Carson, 4 p.m. Friday

BCHS (12-2) faces Modesto-Central Catholic at 4 p.m. Friday at the StubHub Center in Carson. Central Catholic beat Oakland-McClymonds 17-8.

"All the work you put in from January to now: It makes it all worth it, said Eagles quarterback Brandon Jones. "It's been a test the last couple of weeks. But we got back on track this week."

Running back Matt Smith had touchdown runs of 20, 7 and 2 yards despite aggravating a right ankle he sprained one week earlier in the Eagles' Central Section title game win over Tulare-Mission Oak.

"It did bother me tonight but the line did a great job of blocking," said Smith, who finished with 92 yards on 16 carries. "I get the glory but they did all the work."

It was 20-0 at halftime and the Eagles led 40-0 with 7:36 left after wide receiver Josh Jackson caught his second TD pass of the game. It was a running clock after that.

At that point, BCHS had limited the Knights to 20 net yards of offense in the second half.

"They're the unsung heros of the whole season," BCHS coach Jerald Pierucci said of the defense. "The offense puts up the points but the defense has been solid all year long.

"It's a testament to what coach (Sean) Lozano does on the defensive side of the ball. He does a geat job of game planning and taking away the offensive threats from the other side of the football. And they play hard sideline to sideline."

Smith' 20-yard TD was a burst up the middle where he broke an arm tackle at the line of scrimmage and carried a would-be tackler the final three yards to the end zone.

Jones completed a 31-yard TD pass to Josh Jackson on the final play of the first quarter, capping a 34-yard drive set up by a bad snap on a View Park punting situation that lost 28 yards.

Jackson caught his pass in the middle of the field, split two defenders and was hit at the 3. He staggered but kept his feet and lunged into the end zone.

Jones finished 19-of-27 for 250 yards and three touchdowns, giving him 52 TD passes this season.
