Having seen its one-time lead of 16 points shrink to two with less than a minute left, West went to its best finisher to close out Ridgeview.

Malik Washington took a pass inside from Aris Banks and powered to the hoop for a late-game layup to help propel the visiting Vikings to a 57-52 South Yosemite League victory over the Wolf Pack on Thursday night.

The basket capped off a monstrous night for the 6-foot-7 center, who scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 20 rebounds.

"It was a pretty intense game," Washington said. "I fought hard. I'm coming back in the season and I'm ready."

The Vikings (13-6, 2-1 SYL) led 51-35 before a rash of turnovers and a big offensive push by Richard Bivens keyed a 15-1 run that pulled Ridgeview (9-11, 1-2 SYL) to within two points of the lead.

But Washington made sure the Wolf Pack got no closer.

"We've done that a couple of time this year where, we've put ourselves in a hole and kind of dig out of it," Ridgeview coach James Luckey said. "I'm trying to get my guys to understand that we have to start from the beginning and not get down 15 before we finally respond."

Bivens scored 21 points, all in the second half, and pulled down 16 rebounds for Ridgeview, which had its four-game winning streak against West snapped.

"That was a big win for us after having a disappointing loss Tuesday against Golden Valley," West coach Tye Hammond said. "I'm so proud of the way my kids came and played as a group and fought the whole course of the game."

West shot 31 percent (22 of 70) from the field and committed 17 turnovers, nine in the fourth quarter.

Ridgeview hit 32 percent (19 of 60) of its field goal attempts and turned the ball over 18 times.

The win puts the Vikings right in the middle of the SYL title chase.

"It feels great," Washington said. "We're going to keep trying. Working hard. We're doing our best."
