Seven local wrestlers are in the semifinals of the prestigious Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis.
Three of them hail from Bakersfield High: No. 2 seeds Coleman Hammond (145 pounds) and Kyle Pope (182), plus No. 6 seed Hunter Hodges (160), who came from behind to win an overtime decision in his quarterfinal against a wrestler from Wyoming Seminary Prep in Kingston, Pa., the No. 2-ranked team in the nation.
The Drillers sit sixth in the team standings with 49.5 points. Host Clovis, the No. 9 team in the country and two-time defending California champion, has a slim lead over Wyoming Seminary for first place.
Wasco and Frontier also have two wrestlers each in the semifinals: Isaiah Hokit (113) and Sean Medley (220) for the Tigers, and Vincent Gomez (126) and Kyle Shepherd (160) for the Titans.
Semifinals are scheduled for 10:30 this morning with the championship round beginning at 5:30 p.m.
