She Pree Brevil got up, dusted herself off, and walked out of the long jump pit at Bakersfield College frustrated and dismayed.

After a pair of sub-par jumps to begin the competition, the Ridgeview sophomore was sure that her final attempt wasn't anything special.

Brevil was more than happy to be proved wrong moments later when her mark of 16 feet, 9.5 inches was announced.

That distance was just enough for Brevil to edge Wolf Pack teammate Daizhiana Elbert (16-9) for first place during Friday's Foothill Invitational.

It also set a personal best by four-and-a-half inches for Brevil, who later won the girls triple jump competition with a mark of 33-9.

"I had a feeling it was going to be a better jump, but I wasn't expecting a 16-9.5," Brevil said. "At first I was kind of upset because it didn't look like it was what it was."

Brevil came into the meet with the ninth-best long jump (16-5) and 11th best triple jump mark (33-10.25) in the Central Section this year.

Her first two long jump attempts on Friday netted a pair jumps just over 15 feet.

But after watching Elbert land a huge third jump to take the lead in the event, Brevil's competitive nature kicked in.

"She went and jumped a 16-9, and I don't like losing," Brevil said. "It was for myself."

Brevil was one of two girls to win multiple individual events.

Garces' Julianne Finch took first place in the 100 hurdles and the pole vault.

The sophomore dominated both events, winning the 100 hurdles in 16.12 seconds. Tehachapi's Alexis Namey was second, crossing the finish line in 16.86 seconds.

Finch jumped 9-6 to win the pole vault by two and a half feet. Two months ago at the East Relays, she posted a mark of 10-8 in the event, which ranks fourth-best in the section this year.

"Today wasn't my best performance, but I've been kind of pushing it hard this week," Finch said. "I'm just trying to do my best and get ready for Valley."

One girl that did turn in her best performance of the year was Foothill's Daniela Mendez, who knocked off nearly four seconds from her PR in winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.84 seconds.

"It was just amazing," Mendez said.

According to Mendez, the key to her fast time was getting off to a fast start and clearing all the hurdles clean.

Thirteen Kern County schools took part in the annual event, which features several co-ed relay races.

All the races were hand-timed. The meet was void of many of the normal high school running events, including the 200, 400, 800 and 1,600.

Arguably the most exciting race of the day was the final segment of the boys 100 competition, which saw Wasco's Terrance Grinner nip Ridgeview's Rayvon Hooper for the win.

Grinner's winning time was 10.90, while Hooper hit the tape in 10.96 seconds.

"I just paced myself and 60 meters drive-faced," Grinner said. "Pushed it. At the end I did good. Before I started I didn't worry about my other opponent. I don't care how fast they are. If they're fast, it makes me run faster."

Like on the girls side, two boys were two-time individual event winners.

Centennial's Mason Grantz swept the boys throwing events (49-11 in the shot put and 131-4 in the discus) and Ridgeview's Herman Day took first in the boys 110 hurdles (15.62) and high jump (6-4).
