High school notebook: Top local teams fare well in spring-break tournaments

BY ZACH EWING Californian staff writer zewing@bakersfield.com

The baseball league leaders in Bakersfield all fared well in their respective spring-break tournaments.

Southwest Yosemite League leader Frontier went 3-1 in the Fresno Easter Classic, beating Hanford West, Fresno-Bullard and Elk Grove-Franklin and losing only to Salinas on Tuesday.

The Titans are 19-5 on the season and resume SWYL play Tuesday at Bakersfield, which will start USC-bound pitcher Mason Perryman.

Garces, which leads the Southeast Yosemite League, finished 2-2 in the Easter Classic.

Ridgeview, unbeaten thus far in the South Yosemite League, played in the PRO-PT Visalia/Tulare Invitational Upper Division and beat Visalia-Redwood, Tulare Union, Tulare-Mission Oak and Visalia-Golden West before losing 3-0 in a rematch to Redwood in the tournament's semifinals. The Wolf Pack (23-3 overall) plays Golden Valley next week.

Bakersfield Christian reached the Lower Division final of the Visalia/Tulare Invitational and lost 9-8 to Exeter, which scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

All-Star basketball

The second All-Star Valley Classic basketball games are Saturday at Stockdale.

The games pit the best senior players from the Bakersfield area against the best from the Antelope Valley area, with a junior high game at 3:30 p.m., a girls high school game at 5 and the boys high school game at 7.

Local players in the boys game include Stockdale's Christian Bayne, Liberty's Kyle Ferreira, Centennial's Derek Check, Independence's Isaac Clark, East's Fatai Eke and Garces' Rashad Jackson.

Tickets are $10 and $5 for students/children.

North coach milestone

North High's softball team honored coach Corrie Williams-Gannaway for passing the 300-wins milestone earlier this month.

Williams-Gannaway was the 1995 All-Area Softball Co-Player of the Year for the Stars and then played four years at Florida State. She returned to coach North in 2001.

She won the Central Section Division II championship in 2006 and has won 20 games 10 times in 13 years. She hit the 300 late in the 2013 season.

College signings

Two Garces seniors are signing to play Division I college sports this week; the school will host a celebration Wednesday.

Kate Hamilton, a goalkeeper, will play soccer at UC Davis, and Tristan Hammans, a pitcher, will play baseball at Cincinnati.

Also signing Wednesday is South High senior Kelsey Henderson, who will play volleyball at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont.
