High school roundup: Garces set to induct new Hall of Honor class

BY ZACH EWING Californian staff writer zewing@bakersfield.com

Garces' Alumni Board of Directors will induct the newest class into its Hall of Honor on May 3 in Monsignor Leddy Hall on the Garces campus.

There are four inductees:

* Stan Antongiovanni, a 1961 Garces graduate who played football, basketball and baseball and was the senior class president. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and returned to Bakersfield to spend countless hours serving on community boards and volunteering at Garces events.

* The late Dr. Romain Clerou, who provided free medical assistance to Garces athletes as needed throughout his career. He was also the "unofficial" team doctor and school doctor.

* Pat Franey, who sent 12 children to Garces from the 1950s through 1970s and also became the chairman of the ad hoc committee that kept Garces open when the school nearly was closed for financial reasons.

* Tom Werdel, a 1953 Garces graduate who won a Central Section title with the Rams' football team. He later graduated from Stanford and and served in the U.S. Navy. He also helped create and spearheaded the school's most recent physical plan. He personally drafted the Garces constitution.

In addition, the Jim and Bebe Burke Family will be awarded the school's President's Award. The Burkes are longtime fundraisers for the school and also helped found the Ford Dimension and Dream Builders, volunteer organizations for high school students throughout Kern County.

Tickets for the dinner are $100 and are available at Garces. Doors open at 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.garces.org or call (661) 327-2578, ext. 129.

Team with localswins hoops game

The All-Star team with local players won the first All-Valley Basketball All-Star Game in Reedley on Saturday, beating the North Valley team 96-93 in overtime behind big shots from Stockdale's Christian Bayne and Tulare-Mission Oak's Blake Shannon.

Other local players included Ridgeview's Richard Bivens, who threw down a dunk off an alley-oop from Bakersfield's B.J. Shelton.

It was Shelton, however, who caught attention for his dunking before the game. He won the pre-game dunk contest, using one dunk over three students and another reverse dunk. (You can see video of Shelton's dunks at www.bakersfield.com/schoolhousezach.)

Another hoops game coming

The Central Valley North vs. South Senior All-Star Games are Saturday at West Hills College in Lemoore.

The Elite Seniors Boys game starts the day with a 3 p.m. tip-off, followed by the girls game at 5 p.m. and the regular boys game at 7 p.m.

Partial proceeds from the event, which has sold out and drawn dozens of college coaches in its first two seasons, will benefit the Visalia Rescue Mission and Boys and Girls Club.
