MODESTO -- Juan Silverio blasted two home runs as the Bakersfield Blaze closed its first-half schedule with a 12-3 victory over the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field on Sunday.
Silverio hit a two-run blast in the first inning to give Bakersfield a 2-0 lead. He then hit a grand slam to left field to cap a five-run seventh inning that gave the Blaze a 9-2 lead. The infielder finished the game going 3-for-5 with six RBis. Silverio has seven home runs and 39 RBIs on the season.
Bakersfield totaled 13 hits Sunday, with each starter collecting at least one.
Blaze manager Ken Griffey Sr. used five pitchers, with none throwing more than three innings. Carlos Gonzalez allowed one run over three innings (he pitched the fourth through sixth) for the win.
Bakersfield (29-41), which opened the season with an eight-game losing streak and has been deep in the North Division cellar since, closed the first half by winning three of four games at Modesto (32-38).
The San Jose Giants (43-27) won the first-half North Division title, earning an automatic berth into the Cal League playoffs. Bakersfield finished last in the four-team North, 14 games behind San Jose. The Lancaster JetHawks (39-31) won the South.
Patel fires 72 in final round
WICHITA, Kan. -- Bakersfield High graduate Bhavik Patel, who entered the final round in a tie for third place and three strokes off the lead, fired a 1-over-par 72 to finish in a tie for 22nd (8-under 276 overall) at the Air Capital Classic. At age 48, Scott Parel won the event at 18-under 266 to become the fourth-oldest winner in Web.com Tour history, closing with a 7-under 64 for a three-stroke victory.
