  1. CIF votes to expand football bowl games

    Friday, Jan 30 2015 10:52 PM

The CIF approved a measure Friday to expand its football state bowl system to 13 divisions, meaning all 51 section champions from around the state will be invited to play in regional bowl games.

The CIF's Federated Council voted 71-64 to approve the measure. The past two seasons, only 18 teams were selected for regional bowl games, including Bakersfield and Bakersfield Christian in 2013 and Ridgeview in 2014.

The new system takes effect immediately. The 13 regional bowl matchups in Northern and Southern California will be decided by competitive equity. Championship games will be played throughout the state, with Sacramento hosting the biggest games.
