Jo Jo Helberg swept away the competition Sunday as winged Sprint Cars made their first-ever appearance at Kern County Raceway Park.

Helberg scorched the field in qualifying with a lap of 14.296 seconds (125.90 mph) on the paved half-mile oval, made a spectacular last-lap pass to win his heat race then led wire-to-wire to win the King of the Wings George Snider Classic 40-lap feature.

The race was the finale of a six-race series -- three in the midwest in July and the final three (Madera, Irwindale and Bakersfield) this weekend.

"It's awesome this place is so smooth, an absolutely beautiful facility," Helberg of Santa Rosa said after qualifying. "I've driven by it many times on I-5 and wished I could race here and now I am. It's a cool...
