Tradition behind Garces-San Joaquin Memorial matchup unrivaled

History builds tradition. Rivalry games bring out the best of student sections, the sound of the band playing. Graduates from years past filling the stands, reminiscing of the good old days.

And no rivalry in the valley matches the history and tradition of the Holy Bowl. On the field, it was the big playmaking ability of San Joaquin Memorial that gave the Panthers a 44-13 win over Garces in the 49th regular season meeting on Saturday from Sam Tobias Field.

The Christian Brothers of de La Salle founded San Joaquin Memorial in 1945, and two years later, also opened Garces. Played on a dirt infield at the old Bakersfield Thunder Bowl Speedway, Memorial won the inaugural game 18-6 in 1947.
