    On Feb. 18, 2001, the auto racing world suffered one of its most devastating losses when the legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt was killed in an accident on the final lap of the Daytona 500.

    Kevin Harvick, a highly-touted, 25-year-old driver in the Richard Childress Racing stable, was tabbed by Childress to replace Earnhardt on NASCAR's biggest stage, the Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) series.

    Suddenly, the Bakersfield racer who attended and wrestled at North High found himself thrust into the national spotlight. Not only was he now driving on NASCAR's top level, he also was replacing one of the sport's greatest drivers.
