BC held its own in loss to Mt. SAC
By Evans On Sports
The Renegades' 34-20 loss to Mount SAC tonight (Oct. 2) was heartbreaking to the BC fans who envisioned a perfect season. But heading into the game, I was looking for one thing: Would BC play well enough to show it belongs among the elite in SoCal and the state?
The answer is yes.
Mount SAC is the defending state champion and a state title game finalist the last three years. You need to take rankings with a grain of salt because oftentimes (particularly national polls), teams from outside California never face California teams.
That being said, any championship must go through Mount SAC. The Mounties are dominant on defense and have a quarterback who gets great protection and is Joe Montana-like in his ability to surgically take apart opposing defenses when he isn't being pressured.
BC never got it going on the ground, and the Gades even switched quarterbacks as the coaches looked for a spark. Mount SAC built a 21-0 lead by early in the second quarter.
But it was only 28-20 heading into the fourth quarter. BC stayed in the game until the final five minutes when Mount SAC hit a couple of field goals to put the game out of reach.
BC didn't get demolished. The Gades did a better job on offense than any previous Mount SAC opponent this year, according to Mount SAC followers in the press box.
BC's only going to get better. Saturday night showed the Gades are a bonafide contender for their conference title. It won't be easy, not with teams like El Camino, Cerritos, Allan Hancock and Canyons in the league. But if Saturday's game showed anything: BC is going to contend for a conference title.
----Here are some scores of note from Saturday night involving BC's league and the cross-over games against the other powerful National Conference teams:
Hancock beat Fullerton 35-28. Hancock is BC's next opponent, in two weeks.
Saddleback beat Cerritos 28-24
Palomar beat El Camino 25-21
Ventura beat Pasadena 33-29
Grossmont beat Canyons 36-18
BC, Cerritos and El Camino all came into Saturday with 4-0 records.
No game next week for BC; it's a bye week. BC is at Hancock (actually a game played at Righetti High in Santa Maria) in two weeks.
