Blowout win first of two key tuneups for BC
By Evans On Sports
Bakersfield College cruised to a 63-7 win tonight (Sept. 18) over Antelope Valley. The defense helped create four interceptions (most of them came when the AV QBs were forced to throw quickly because of rushing defenders right in their faces) plus recover three fumbles (AV fumbled six times in all).
I look at this game as the first of two tuneups before the Gades get into the meat of their schedule. Next week, BC plays at Citrus, a better team than AV but a team the Gades should beat.
AV, nearly a playoff team last season that's now 0-3, got buried so quickly it never had a chance to recover. It was 42-0 at halftime, and by the time the game ended, five of the turnovers set up touchdowns, and that doesn't count the 86-yard punt return for a score by Lee West.
The tuneup aspect of this refers to the game in two weeks, at home vs. top-ranked and defending state champion Mount San Antonio. That's when we'll see how far the Gades have progressed and whether it's feasible to expect BC to contend for the title in its powerful conference.
There were some stunning results Saturday. The two obvious shockers were Moorpark beating Allan Hancock 22-21 and L.A. Pierce beating Fullerton 24-21 in OT. Moorpark was 0-10 last season and has been horrendous the last 2-3 years. It was also shocking that Fullerton, ranked No. 2 in the state, would lose to Pierce. It gives a little more respect to BC's 52-41 shootout win over Pierce to open the season.
Citrus, BC's opponent next week, lost to Canyons, 38-24. Saddleback, which had a 24-13 lead on BC in the third quarter before the Gades won 41-24, pulled out a 17-13 win over unsung Chaffey.
Mount SAC will hold it's top ranking after downing Desert, 36-10.
