With the addition of moving to scheduling and recruiting, Bill Kernen is certainly finding ways to keep himself busy.
Cal State Bakersfield's baseball coach settled into his new house Wednesday and then went right back to building the base for the Roadrunners' newest program.
The schedule for CSUB's inaugural season continues to take shape with trips to a pair of Big 12 schools in back-to-back weeks toward the end of the 2009 season. The 'Runners also set the foundation for a rivalry with their northbound neighbors Fresno State.
In addition to CSUB's tournament Feb. 20-22, 2009, the 'Runners will play in Fresno State's tournament March 9-14 as well as a home-and-home series with the Bulldogs April 3-5 in Fresno and the 7-8 in Bakersfield.
In back-to-back weekends in May, the 'Runners will play at the University of Nebraska the 8-10 and at the University of Missouri the 15-17.
"I want them to have that experience," Kernen said.
Kernen purposely set the road trip for the tail end of the season to give his club the opportunity to mature as a group.
"Even if we're overmatched that first year it's OK, because it's something they need to experience," Kernen said.
About 90 percent of CSUB's schedule for 2009 is set, however, the WAC recently adjusted its conference schedule for that season, which impacts a few games for the 'Runners.
During the process of scheduling for 2009, Kernen has already set some things in motion for games in 2010.
