SANTEE -- Freshman Trevor Stan was the first round leader and sits in fourth after day one of the Carlton Oaks Western Illinois Invitational at Carlton Oaks Country Club.
Stan posted an even par 72 in the opening round before carding a 79 in the second round. He is two shots behind leader James Holley (73-76-149) of San Diego State entering today's final round.
The Roadrunners (315-328-643) are in sixth place among nine teams, 23 shots behind the co-leaders DePaul and Omaha. CSUB's Brett Kettler was tied for 11th (79-76-155) with DePaul's Jonathan Hewett after two rounds. Other Roadrunners: Jin Park (79-87-166, 32nd); Dylan Lym (85-86-171, T39). Freshman Izzad Ibrahim (87-89-176, 46th); Matthew Deford, playing as an individual, (92-89-181, T50).
Tennis legend Billie Jean King's mother Betty, a Taft native, dies
Taft native Betty Moffitt, 91, the mother of tennis great Billie Jean King and former major league pitcher Randy Moffitt, died Friday with her two children by her side in Prescott, Ariz. There was no immediate word on the cause of death.
Moffitt moved to Prescott, about 100 miles northwest of Phoenix, 27 years ago. Her husband of 65 years, Bill Moffitt, died in 2006. The family has planned private funeral services.
Jam falls to Springfield
The Springfield (Mass.) Armor erased a 16-point, second-half deficit on the way to a 116-109 victory over the visiting Bakersfield Jam. Jared Cunningham led the Jam (12-19) with 26 points and Damion James scored 24. Springfield is 11-18.
Carr ranked 4th-best QB
Bakersfield Christian graduate Derek Carr, who set several school passing records at Fresno State the past four years, is ranked as the fourth best NFL Draft-eligible quarterback by NFLDraftScout.com.
Carr was rated behind Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles from Central Florida and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior was rated as the 29th best prospect overall and is projected by the service to be selected late in the first round or early in the second round of the NFL Draft.
Choi's 77 leads BC men golfers
VALENCIA -- The Bakersfield College men's golf team finished last in a seven-team Western State Conference tournament at Valencia Country Club.
Jeremy Choi had the low round for the Renegades with a 77. Saray Patel had an 83 and Paul Cooper finished with an 87 for BC.
