Philip Valos and three relievers shut out Allan Hancock College over the final five innings and Tyler Painton hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the sixth to lead the Bakersfield College baseball team to a 5-4 win Tuesday at Gerry Collis Field.

Painton also doubled and scored twice for the Renegades (5-1). Blayne Ontiveros went 2-for-4 with a run scored for BC.

“The bullpen did a great job,” said BC coach Tim Painton, Tyler Painton’s father. “Valos got better as the game went along.”
BC plays host to Merced College today at 6 p.m. in a game added last week to the Renegades’ schedule.

CSUB swimming

The CSU Bakersfield men’s swimming team will attempt to defend its league title from a year ago at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming Championships today through Saturday at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.

CSUB’s Mitchell Huxhold, a freshman from Escondido, has the MPSF’s top time in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:27.21).

CSUB also has the fastest time in the 800-meter freestyle and the second quickest times in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

For the CSUB women, Rachel McCall, a senior from Calgary, Alberta, ranks second in the MPSF in the 100 free (50.75), third in the 50 free (23.29), fourth in the 200 free (1:48.69) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.95).

CSUB’s men will compete against Air Force, BYU, Hawaii, UNLV, North Dakota, UOP, Seattle and Wyoming.

The women will match up against BYU, Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, UOP, San Diego, Seattle, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara.

UNLV and BYU are top-25 men’s teams, and CSUB coach Chris Hansen said Hawaii and Wyoming are also very strong.

As for the women, Hansen said: “The goal for this group is to show all these MPSF teams what the future of CSUB women’s swimming and diving is going to look like. ...

“I do expect to see many school records broken this week.”

The diving competition will be held at Air Force.

CSUB men’s golf

ST. GEORGE, Utah — CSU Bakersfield concluded its first men’s golf tournament of the spring by finishing in a 13th-place tie with Seattle at the 14-team  Southern Utah Invitational at the par-72, 6,879-yard Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George.

CSUB finished with a 617. Cal State Fullerton placed first with a 575. Tournament host Southern Utah was second with a 577.

CSUB sophomore Chase Goodin tied for 36th with a two-round 151, 7-over-par.

He shot 73 on Monday and 78 on Tuesday.

Matt Hammons, Patrick Bell and Jason Errecart all had two-day scores of 156 for the Roadrunners to tie for 66th place. Dylan Lym had a 157 to tie for 77th.

The tournament winner was Chris Russo from Cal St. Northridge, who had two rounds of 70 for a 4-under-par 140.

“We played about the same we did on Monday, which was pretty scraggly,” CSUB coach Dave Barber said.

BC softball

VENTURA — Ventura College’s Teresa Lemos pitched a five-hitter with three strikeouts and the Pirates backed her with 10 hits for a 7-2 victory over Bakersfield College in a non-conference softball game.

It was the seventh straight win for Ventura (7-1).

Julie Estep drove in the only runs for BC (4-4) with a two-run single in the fourth inning that gave the ’Gades a 2-1 lead.

But Ventura followed with a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by a 3-run triple by Lemos.

Kaitlin Toerner, Kara Frankhouser, Jazmine Irvin all singled for Bakersfield.
