Local report: Three Roadrunner wrestlers place in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Bryce Hammond placed fifth at 174 pounds, Ian Nickell was sixth at 133 and Timmy Box was eighth at 141 as Cal State Bakersfield place-winners at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Inviational wrestling tournament.
Hammond had a 12-0 win in his first match Saturday, then pinned Northern Iowa’s Cody Caldwell in 2:48. But Navy’s Matthew Miller pinned Hammond in the consolation semifinals, sending Hammond into the fifth-place match, where he beat Wisconsin’s Scott Liegel 8-2.
Nickell beat Colin Johnston of West Virginia 7-4 and North Dakota State’s Joshua Rodriguez 4-3 before losing his final two matches, 9-0 to Cal Poly’s Devon Lotiito and getting pinned in 59 seconds by Virginia’s George DiCamillo.
Box pinned North Dakota State’s Mark Erickson in 6:08 before losing by technical fall to West Virginia’s Nathan Pennesi. Box lost 9-5 to Nebraska’s Ridge Kiley.
Other CSUB wrestlers who competed Saturday but did not place were 125-pound Tyler Iwamura, who lost 15-5 to Wyoming’s Tyler Cox in the consolation round of 12, and Adam Fierro, who was pinned by Boise State’s Georgi Ivanov in the 157-pound consolation round of 12.
CSUB had 44 team points to place 15th.
ECHL hockey
STOCKTON — Facing adversity in many forms throughout the evening, the Bakersfield Condors clawed their way to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Stockton Thunder at Stockton Arena.
Bakersfield snapped a six-game winless streak and in the process sent the Thunder to its fourth straight loss.
The tone of the game was set from the opening faceoff as the Condors Liam Huculak and Thunder Garet Hunt went toe-to-toe in an entertaining, punch-filled bout. Stockton would strike minutes later on the power play as Phil Mangan scored from the right-wing circle for a 1-0 lead at the 2:59 mark. Bakersfield responded at 13:41 when C Robby Dee deflected a Trevor Hendrikx shot past Thunder goalie Tyler Bunz on the power play to tie the game at 1-1.
Olivier Malka took butt-end of a stick to the face in the first period and was taken off the ice on a stretcher. He stayed on the ice for about 10 minutes.
PGA qualifying
LA QUINTA — Bakersfield High graduate Bhavik Patel shot a 5-under par 67 at PGA West to move into 33rd place in the PGA Tour qualifying tournament.
Patel, who bogeyed his last hole, is eight shots out of the lead with two rounds to play.
BC men’s basketball
Damian Robinson scored 16 points to lead a balanced attack as Bakersfield College beat Santa Barbara 87-74 Saturday afternoon at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.
Other double-figure scorers for BC (2-4) were Van Holloway (14 points), Gerald Bates (12) and R’Mand Harp (11).
BC led the entire game, although Santa Barbara (2-5) pulled within 43-41 at halftime.
BC women’s basketball
Bakersfield College freshman forward MacKenzie Odle scored 15 points as the Renegades defeated Mira Costa College, 63-59, in the consolation finals of the Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday.
Odle was named to the all-tournament team. MC held a 26-2 advanatge in free-throw attempts.
BC next plays host to Taft College on Friday at 7 p.m.
JC women’s soccer
WALNUT— Mitzi Ibarra of Bakersfield College scored a goal for the South at the Sophomore Showcase at Mount San Antonio College. The North team defeated the South 6-3.
JC wrestling
MONTEREY PARK — Bakersfield College finished ninth as a team at the Southern Regionals at East L.A. College but saw four wrestlers qualify for the state meet next weekend.
Max Ramirez finished in fourth place at 141 pounds and Ty Yong finished in sixth place at 133 pounds.
Ryan Stiber (149 pounds) and Cesar Luna (165 pounds) won challenge matches to qualify.
The CCCAA Championships will be held next weekend at West Hills College in Coalinga.
